In an effort to provide parameters around the ethical use of computers, the Computer Ethics Institute developed the Ten Commandments of Computer Ethics.

I think students violate the 1st and 8th commandments the most. Cyberbullying can be performed on a computer or any form of media and it is very easy to plagiarize someone else's work.

I think this violation occurs because students will go home and use their computers to spread negativity online. This is why we had so many speakers and assemblies involving cyberbullying in elementary through high school. In terms of plagiarism, some students may not cite their resources or will use AI for assignments they either do not want to complete or do not care. It is crucial to give credit to the original writer as well as put in the time and effort to complete written assignments for a grade. This commandment has to do with dishonesty, which is why many professors attach plagiarism website checkers in order to ensure students submit original work.

I think parents should be more stricter with letting their children use the computer and at least monitor what they are doing to some extent in order to ensure safety for them and others. I also believe stricter grading should be enforced to reduce or eliminate this unethical behavior. Not all schools have the same plagiarism protocol, but I believe it is important for a high plagiarism percentage to lead to some sort of punishment. It is unacceptable to be submitting unoriginal work and not crediting the original author for the work they put time and energy into.
