The young men in All Quiet On The Western Front were persuaded to enlist on the war by Kantorek, to prove their patriotism, some of them died a horrible death. They blamed Kantorek for exposing them to the war. Paul felt that they were cut off from their lives just as they began to live it. They had nothing to return to, the war had become their entire lives.
