Teaching Outside the Classroom

This article gives ideas, tips, and reasoning behind why field trips are effective for student learning. The authors state, "Field experiences early in a student’s career can be formative and can inspire students to continue in a field," which is something that I believe as well. The article also discusses the importance of studying abroad and how field trips can inspire students to study abroad in the future. One thing I learned from this article was that encouraging students to participate in service learning projects can be an effective way to get students out of the classroom and involved in their community.

The lessons available on this website are almost all "hands-on" and experimental which would be perfect for my future classroom.

Field Trips are Valuable Learning Experiences

This article describes field trips as, "a shared social experience that provides the opportunity for students to encounter and explore novel things in an authentic setting." Because of this article, I learned that teachers often are not prepared or equipped to lead a field trip. This article helped me to realize what it takes to create a (potentially) successful field trip!

This clip is a preview for a video series on a virtual field trip to China. The series covers Earth science related topics such as deforestation, wildlife, and the carbon cycle. The video is accompanied with an article about virtual field trips which also contains links to virtual field trips in different countries. I have never heard of virtual field trips before finding this site, and I am so excited to incorporate these videos into my future classroom!

The Importance of Experiencing Nature for Inner City Students

This video takes a look at how outdoor field trips are important for students who attend inner city schools and may be from lower socioeconomic status's. Going outdoors positively affects student learning, but this video shows that it also positively affects health, mindset and sparks adventure. iThis video gave me a perspective that I haven't thought about much before, and I learned that outdoor experiences can be so impactful to some students simply because they are surrounded by a city and rarely get these opportunities.
