Wednesday March 4 : League Format

The league format is seen most commonly in football leagues such as the premier league and laliga santander. This format is the least interesting but is also the fairest of all tournament styles. For example, in knockout tournaments, it is very easy to find dark horse teams who are lower seeded but make it very far in the tournament, teams such as 11 seeded Xavier and 11 seeded Loyala-Chicago in the NCAA basketball tournament. Comparing this to league format, there has only been one notable case of a team who came out of no where to win the tournament being 2016 Leicester.

An example of a league tournament:
There are 20 teams and they will not needed to be put into seeds. Throughout the course of the season, every team will play each other twice making for 38 games a season. 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 for a draw and none for a lost. Whichever team has the most points is crowned the champion of the league. However, when two teams have the same points, the league will use tiebreakers to sort out who wins. The order of the tiebreakers goes: goal difference, goals scored, away wins and then finally head to head matchups.
https://www.premierleague.com/premier-league-explained

A multilevel style is similar to that of a single elimination bracket. However the loser goes down to consolation brackets to determine the final outcome and ranking of all of the teams. The winners will continue along a single elimination style. The further you go along in the winners bracket the higher in the consolation ladder you'll be. I've seen this in baseball tournaments that I have played in. Football tournaments. Even some lacrosse tournaments are organized like this. I like this style of tournament a lot because no matter what rank you end up with you always play the same amount of games as the victors.

This system is also known as the sudden death tournament. Every match the loser of that is immediately eliminated from winning the championship. Although they won't be able to participate in the wining championship, they will still get a chance to play in other games, to see what place they will be in, within the losing teams. So in conclusion, in this system, the winner of each match moves on to get closer to the championship while the loser competes for the lesser place in the tournament. A few examples that this system is used in, is the majority of the kanto tournaments that happen in our school.

https://www.definitions.net/definition/SINGLE-ELIMINATION+TOURNAMENT

Round Robin Double Split

This system is really good if the teams want to get more playing time because it creates more possible matches. Another good point is that the participant can rank really high even though they lost few games in the first half. Double round robin has the same schedule round robin however they repeat the games for a second time which is an unfortunate disadvantage when it comes to time management, since the players might run out of time. All players compete against each other twice in the same sequence. If a team lost against another team, unfortunately they are forced to play against them in the same day again, which might be seen as a con. With the robin round double the team levels get decided and the next day the same level teams play each other.

A compass draw tournament is popular amongst sports such as tennis and pickleball, and is a peculiar, yet interesting tournament format that can be used for any sport. These tournaments work best with 8, 16, 32, or 64 players/teams.
There are various brackets on each draw sheet that are marked by points on a compass (East, West, North, South, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest). When a team loses they are moved to a different bracket, winners always just advance in their current bracket. All of our brackets have the games numbered in the order they are to be played and also list the exact location on the bracket where the losing team should move in the bracket.
https://www.printyourbrackets.com/types-of-tournaments.html

This style of leadership allows for everyone's idea to be accounted for. Whilst there will still be a leader to ensure that progress is being made and that no one is slacking behind, all decisions will by made by a group. This means everyone will have a fair and equal chance to vote on a decision and is the fairest way. I think that there are very few leaders who follow this style of leadership as it is tough to carry out in a large group. However, in a small project group, it is very possible to do this and is possibly the best way to do it.
https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/leadership-styles

This type of leadership makes it so that the leader of the group isn't leading people but instead letting everyone do whatever they want. Although this sounds the fairest, research has shown that this gives the lowest productivity when working. It also means that the group has to solve their own conflicts which could slow the work that is getting done. This leadership is very unique, so there are situations where this would be a great time to use it but I personally think that it would kind of be hard to get work done. In this unit, we have to create new ideas and have many discussions, this type of leadership would be hard to use but instead I think the democratic leadership would be better.
https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-laissez-faire-leadership-2795316

In this type of leadership, the leader is the servant and the main goal of the leader is to serve the others below him. In a stereotypical power pyramid the leader is always on top and the most powerful, however in servant leadership the leader shares this power puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible. A servant-leader prioritises the needs of their team and encourages collective decision-making. A con of this type of leadership might be that servant leaders tend to lack authority and suffer a conflict of interest by putting their teammates ahead of winning, or competition. It is in a way like heart over mind
https://www.greenleaf.org/what-is-servant-leadership/

Democratic leaders: makes final decision but includes team members in the decision making process. Encourages creativity, and team members tend to have high job satisfaction and high productivity. This isn’t always an effective style when you need to make a quick decision.
Autocratic leaders: makes decisions without consulting their team members, even if their input would be useful. Functions well when quick decision making is needed, since there’s no need for team input. However, this style can be demoralizing, and it can lead to high levels of absenteeism and staff turnover.
https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_84.htm

There are three different styles of coaching that if all are applied make a very good coach. One of these three coaching styles is called autocratic coaching. This is a very commanding style of coaching. The coach makes the decision and everybody else must follow. This could be used for running drills, if somebodies safety is at risk etc. Another style is a democratic style. This is when the coach consults players for future courses of action. This can be applied when mid-game the coach discusses set plays to be used in the game with his or her players. The final style is holistic coaching. This is when the coach allows the players to direct and run something themselves without much input from the coach.
https://onlinesportmanagement.ku.edu/community/styles-of-coaching

I would want to be a coach because I will be able to apply Lewin's democratic leadership style. Democratic leaders make the final decision but include team members in the decision making process. Since it encourages their team to have high creativity, and team members tend to have high job satisfaction, and high productivity, I think it is one of the most suitable leadership styles out of all of them. Also, coach requires correcting massive amounts of data, which I think would be interesting

I would have 6 teams of 11, which would be a perfect number if all of the grade is here since we have 66 players. The activity I chose was basketball, each round five people will get to play from the team but in another round those five can't play and the other five needs to play so everyone gets equal playing time means someone will have to sub out. The tournament style I will choose is going to be six team round robin. How it is going to work is for the first half of the class we are going to decide the levels so it will not affect the score. The second half depending on the wins and loses, the teams are going to play each other, the teams who have 2-0 meaning they won two games in the first half will be automatically in the semi finals. The six teams will separate into two pools (as poolA and poolB) of teams of three and play against each other, so one team is going to play against two teams in the first half. 1-1 (one win, one lose) is going to play the 0-2 of the other pool. An example of the chart can be found below. Each game will take approximately six minutes. For the second half the levels of the team is going to be decided from first half. A person with 0-2 still have a chance to win the tournament which is a good thing.

Teams: There will be 10 teams of 5 players. (Subs will be performed during games and in between games to ensure that everyone gets roughly the same amount of playing time.)
Activity: The sport will be basketball.
Tourney Style: There will first be two 5 team divisional brackets. After every team has played each other teams seeds will be given and a single elimination modified levels tournament will begin.
Roles: (Roles are designated within teams) Coach, captain, duty team member, sports board member, publicity and marketing member, and everybody will participate in refereeing other games.
Breakdown:
-Games will be played on the 4 side baskets of the main court.
-Within each division each team will play each other once. Winners will be rewarded 2 points, if the game ends in a draw both teams get 1 point, and the loser gets 0 points. If the top spot of a division is shared by two teams they will play a quick game to determine the first seed.
-During the levels tournament there will be inter divisional play and the two divisional champions will be play each other for the title. The 1st seed will get a bye, 2nd and 3rd seed, and the 4th and 5th seed will play each other. The losers will be fully eliminated for this first round. The winner of the 4th and 5th seed game will play the first seed. Then the 2nd and 3rd seeded teams will play next. The winner of this match will play the winner of the 1st vs. 4th/5th seeded teams. The divisional champion will then play the other divisional champion that mimics this structure. To add some interest, the losers of the divisional title round (the loser of the semifinal round) will play each other for 3rd and 4th place.
-Details: Each game will take 5 minutes with a 1 minute transition time. The league play will take place over 2 classes. The refs will keep track of score and the winner of each game. The wins and losses will be tallied to create the ranking within each division. The finals will be played full court with 10 minute halves. Teams will be determined prior to the league play electronically with a random team generator. The games will start an hour before class ends to get in five games by the end of class. Prior to games beginning team coaches can organize drills and warmups. Or sit around doing nothing. Each team can develop set plays that can be used in game by the captain. The duty team will setup bibs, water, etc. The sports board will organize the game schedule

Because I am not so sure what kind of sport would be the best to play with in a whole grade, I am going to talk about what I would want this whole unit to look like. Because we have such a big group to work with, I think it is going to be very hard to make sure everyone gets the playing time they want. This also means that many groups will be off at the same time. During this time everyone will probably get bored, so it might be a good idea to have something going on at the sidelines. For example, people can do team building activities against the other groups and whoever wins gets a prize. It is not like I’m the one who decided on what sport I would want to do, but I think we should do a sport that everyone will enjoy and everyone will have an even amount of playing time. Throughout our PE classes this year, there are many times where people just tend to stand around because they aren’t sure of what to do. I want to make sure that we will be able to create an atmosphere where everyone feels like they know what they are doing and that they will genuinely be able to enjoy PE class. Even people who don’t really look forward to it. One last thing is that, because the teachers are not going to be very involved throughout this unit, everyone including me has to work really hard on our collaboration skills. I think we have to make sure to remember that this is PE class and that we should listen to people who have new ideas. Even though it is good to say your ideas, I think we should all keep in mind that there are certain times and certain things that we shouldn’t say because a big discussion might start or some people might not end up being happy.
