Here are eight examples of how QR codes have been used, mainly from retailers. 

Raddison Edwardian
Hotel chain Radisson Edwardian added QR codes to the menus in its restaurants recently. 
Upon scanning the codes, customers could see the selected dish being prepared by the chef. A great way to add to the customer experience, and also to help them decide what to eat.
Tesco
In one of the best examples I have seen yet, Tesco in Korea created a virtual store for smartphone users in a subway. While waiting for the train, mobile users could use their phone’s QR code reader to scan and add items to their shopping lists for purchase. 

AXA
In an excellent example, AXA uses QR codes to extend the experience from its TV ads. 

ScottSelect
This TV ad prominently features a QR code which, when scanned, sends users to its mobile landing page:


Best Buy
The US retail chain has added a QR code reader to its mobile apps, which is one good way to ensure that customers don’t have to actively download a third party reader before interacting with ads. 
QR codes are used in offline ads to send customers to mobile product pages, as well as in stores. 

Extending shopping hours
By adding QR codes to its shop window, the retailer featured in this video can send users to its mobile site to see details of products, even when the store is closed. 

Lacoste
By using QR codes in shop windows, Lacoste can send users to a classic bat and ball arcade game on their mobiles, with the bait of a 15% discount for those that choose to register at the end. 

Wilkinson Sword
The razor brand used QR codes in Tescos, offering entry to a competition and videos of its products in action. One good touch was to add both a URL and an SMS option for those without code reader apps.

When QR codes are leveraged for industrial use they serve a useful function to help facilitate a process or complete an information channel. When scanned, the QR code simply directs authorized users to key information presented on a mobile landing page.

The potential uses for QR codes within an industrial context is virtually unlimited; here are but a few examples:

QR Codes can be of two types: Static and Dynamic

Static QR Codes encode the data directly into the code. Just like a barcode. Most QR Code Generation tools (basic or professional) will allow you to create Static QR Codes for free. Even if you do not subscribe post the free trial, the Static QR Codes will continue to work.

These QR Codes have limitations though - the content can never be edited and you cannot know how many people scanned it

Dynamic QR Codes contain short URLs usually provided by the QR Code Generation service. You can use this short URL to redirect to any URL anytime. It is also possible to track analytics. But to keep this QR Code active, you will need to keep the short URL active. For that, you need to pay a subscription fee post free trial.

QR Codes are versatile, they are able to store many different types of data. Each QR Code has a section dedicated to informing the reader what sort of data it holds. This allows for different data types to be encoded and decoded with ease. Here are some of the most common data types you will come across:

  • Contact Data – Data is stored in a contact card and can include a persons name, phone number, email address, website and others. These are ideal for inclusion on a business card allowing people a way to easily transfer details from the card into their digital devices.

  • Calendar Data – This can include a calendar appointment that can be saved directly into someones diary when scanned, a party invite could make use of this for example. 

  • URL – This is simply a URL that when scanned would be used by a smartphones browser to take a user a given webpage. As an example this could be used on a food container to provide a link to a support webpage or other content

  • Email Address – This could be used to open a blank email with a predefined subject and recipient ready for the user scanning to add content and send. 

  • Phone Number – A phone number that when scanned would appear directly in a phones dialer ready to dial or would be saved to the address book.

  • SMS – An new SMS could be opened ready to send to a predefined recipient. 

  • Plain Text – Text can be included that may not have a predefined function but could be used by a bespoke application to carry out any given task. You can store up to 7,089 characters of numerical data or 4,296 alphanumerical characters in a standard QR Code, Micro QR Codes can hold up to 35 numeric characters and iQR Codes a massive 40,000 numerical characters.

  • Geo Location – A link to a location that when scanned, can be processed by the reader and used to give directions to an event you're promoting.

meCard
This type of QR codes contains contact details. Calendar Event
These QR codes are mostly found concert or movie tickets and invitation cards. They contain information about location, time, and date of an event, and sometimes, a short description of the event as well. Smartphones are playing a big part in driving the popularity of QR Codes. The flexibility of smartphones means many QR Code alternatives can coexist without the need for expensive hardware. The user simply needs to install an app allowing them to use the standard of their choice. Most apps support multiple formats.

Below are some links to the most common alternatives that exist. We are not including other types of QR Code here such as Micro QR Code or iQR Code.

Blipper – This technology claims to instantaneously convert anything in the real world into an "interactive wow experience". Allows you to photograph real objects and have additional content pushed to you based on what you took the photo of.

Microsoft Tag – Uses a grid of triangles to encode data but introduces colours which allow the tags to code more data in even smaller spaces. Microsoft discontinued these in August 2015 and they are now run by Scanbuy

Google Goggles – Very versatile allowing you to take photos of anything and then pull up additional data related to that image. For example take a photo of a landmark to get additional information about its history. It even solves Suduko puzzles for you. For most use cases, you require an active data connection in order to use the scanner

MaxiCode – 2D barcode using circles rather than squares. A barcode can scan approx 93 characters and it is possible to place up to 8 in close proximity and chain them together in order to store more data.

Data Matrix – Another similar alternative, Can hold about half as much data as a QR Code.

Most of these different standards will contain much of the same features. Some are newer than others and designed for slightly different purposes. For the time being, QR Codes remain the most popular and their use is growing faster than any other.

The answer to this is simplicity, both in creating a QR Code and in the end user actually using it. A QR Code costs almost nothing to make and there are many free generators on the internet. So long as you have an internet connection and a printer, you can create a QR Code. You don’t even have to have a printer if you’re looking for an electronic QR Code.

The other key benefit of QR Codes is that the can be read by almost any smartphone that has a camera. Free applications are available on almost every platform that allows a user to quickly and easily extract the data from a code. No special hardware and no cost to the user. This is mainly possibly because the QR Code specification has been standardize and while Denso Wave hold patents on the technology, they will not pursued those patents when people make QR Codes that confirm to the standards.

QR (Quick Response) code is the trademark name for the two dimensional barcode system. It was originally invented in 1994 by Denso Wave, a Toyota subsidiary, as a way to track vehicles as they were assembled, and to scan components at high speeds. While Denso Wave does hold the patent on the technology, it has granted free licence on it, going so far as to publish the spec online, and allowing anyone to use it.

The conventional one dimensional barcodes used on virtually every consumer product are mechanically scanned. That is, they're read by physically bouncing a narrow beam of light onto the code, which can be interpreted using the pattern of light reflected off the white gaps between the lines.

As QR code technology evolved, it began to contain more and more information. The initial version was 21 x 21 pixels and held just 4 characters worth of data. The most recent version is 177 pixels square, and it holds 1852 characters
