* Attention ALL Hartpury students.
These will take place 17:00-19:00pm on Tuesday's in Graze 2 on selected weeks. These weeks will be in Semester 1 (week 2,4,6,8 and 10) and Semester 2 (week 2,4,6,8 and 10).

These evenings will host guests, predominantly from outside of Hartpury, and these are likely to be leaders, policy makers and academics whom have influential roles working for key industry stakeholders across racing thus, this is an opportunity to network with individuals whom shape the global sport as we know it.

These events are unlikely to be recorded to enable our guests to talk freely and confidentially thus, they provide true industry insight into the exciting sport of racing. This also means you need to join us in person, or you'll miss out.

Whatever programme you're studying, you are very welcome to join Hartpury's Horseracing Community. If there are any questions about these events, please contact Laura Friend (Laura.Friend@Hartpury.ac.uk)

We will be joined by British Horseracing Authority's Head of Handicapping. This lecture will focus on performance analysis in racing and the role of handicapper to ensure horses compete against horses of a similar ability. Of course, the primary objectives are to optimise horse welfare and to provide a competitive betting product to ensure 'uncertainty of outcome' within the delivery of the sport. But, how is 'ability' assessed when racing takes place internationally on 364 days of the year? This lecture will provide an overview of the different types of races that take place and how these are managed by the sport governing body to ensure safety of horse and rider e.g. weight for age and handicap. It will provide an explanation of how handicap marks are calculated based upon the performance of the horse every time it races, irrespective of race-type or where in the world the race takes place. As every race 'run under rules' is televised, this team spend hours each day watching races and awarding handicapping grades every time a horse runs and these impact the future career trajectory of these horses and the weight they must carry to 'level the playing field' in terms of ability and optimise horse welfare. The handicapping grades awarded to horses are regularly scrutinised in the racing media thus, it is important that decisions are evidence based so the sport governing body can defend marks awarded - but what evidence is used when making these decisions? These processes are fundamental to understanding the sport so join us and you may end up having a go at handicapping some races yourself!

Why attend? If you love watching racing, or would like a greater understanding of performance analysis in racing, this guest lecture will provide unique insight into sport governance that you won't find anywhere else.

Retraining of Racehorses - This organisation hopefully needs no introduction! It was launched just over 20 years as the organisation to represent, and facilitate, quality of life for Thoroughbred racehorses after racing. To date the RoR brand is associated with celebrating the versatility of the Thoroughbred to perform competitively across a variety of equestrian disciplines. RoR drive demand for former racehorses in Great Britain by funding prize money for competitions run specifically for RoR registered horses and some competitions are worth up to a value of £50k (in British Eventing)! RoR also contribute financially to the running of various re-training centres across Great Britain, all of which offer life-time loans of former racehorses but these centres retain ownership in case owner circumstances change. The RoR also fund an Emergency Fund for those former racehorses that slip through these safety nets and need additional help therefore, no racehorse should suffer from neglect. Over recent years around the world, there has been an increased focus on the life cycle of the Thoroughbred and Hartpury have partnered with racing's Horse Welfare Board and RoR to launch Great Britain's first ever Thoroughbred Census to enhance traceability of the former racehorses. Whilst RoR provides traceability of those Thoroughbreds who actively engage in RoR competitions, clinics or other activities, RoR's database does not currently capture the whereabouts of all former racehorses. The Thoroughbred Census aims to increase the traceability of ALL former racehorses, many of which may be happy enjoying their lives but are just not actively engaged with RoR. The Thoroughbred Census also aims to explore the interests and preferences of owners of former racehorses, so that GB's aftercare provision can be shaped to optimise life after racing for TB's. In addition to all of the above initiatives, this guest lecture will explore the success of Thoroughbreds within Equine Assisted Therapy programmes in Great Britain but also globally. The Thoroughbred is sometimes referred to as being 'crazy/ fizzy/ flighty etc' yet owners of TB's often disagree with this, so how safe are TB's when around children with disabilities or autism? How influential are training and management practices on the behaviour of Thoroughbreds? Does our management of this breed limit their potential after racing? This lecture will explore how RoR are evolving to support the aftercare of all Thoroughbreds after racing.

Why attend? If you are the owner/ keeper of a former racehorse and / or just love the Thoroughbred, then this guest lecture is for you.

Week 5 Dissertation Fair (Focussed on level 5 students but any student due to complete a Dissertation next academic year)

Hi all,

This week's student event will be a Dissertation Fair on Wednesday 21/02/24. This event will be targeting ALL level 5 students across ALL equine programmes however, the event is also for any student who will be completing the dissertation module next year e.g. part time students who straddle level 5 & 6.

This is your opportunity to explore potential dissertation ideas with staff across the Equine Department in a 'speed dating' format with staff stood around the room with posters. This event was launched last year and it was a successful way for students to meet staff they don't normally come across who, may, have expertise in the area you're thinking of researching. Of course, if you don't have any research ideas yet, then this event is likely to help you formulate ideas, so it really is an event not to miss!

For the level 5 racing modules, this event partially clashes with your IHRB racing lecture therefore, my suggestion is that we meet in the classroom to discuss racing focussed dissertation ideas and then walk to MDC1 together. We were due on the simulators in week 6 so I will change that to a classroom session to ensure we don't lose SoW content but I will book the simulators for the ATH instead either that week, or a different week. Please watch for an email from the IHRB module page to confirm SoW plans in due course.

For any student not studying IHRB but who is likely to complete a Dissertation next year, we will see you outside MDC1 at 11:55pm.

Event summary:

12-13:00pm in MDC1 - sit-down walk through of the Dissertation module and what a research project at Hartpury involves

13:30 - 15:00 in Graze 7, 9 and 10 - speed dating format enabling you to meet staff from across the Equine Department.
