think again. The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, also known as the Boxing Day Tsunami, occurred on 26 December with an astonishing 30 meters of tsunami waves.

The reason for this terrible natural disaster was the underwater seismic activity offshore. 

Communities along the surrounding coasts of the Indian Ocean were severely affected, and the tsunami has killed an estimated 227,898 people in 14 countries! Crazy, right?

The tsunami occurred in the Indian Ocean (it was an undersea megathrust earthquake).

Safe to say, the Boxing Day tsunami was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history!

Rudi: Yes, 44 people were killed when their bus was caught in the huge forest fire.

 

Rudi: The people that died were: 37 cadets, the bus driver, 3 firemen and 3 police officers. The prison service cadets wanted to help to evacuate the prison but the bus they were traveling on was trapped on the road. The firemen and the police officers tried to rescue the people on the bus. One of the firemen who died, was a 16 years old volunteer. 

Rudi: The fire caused a lot of damage: 25,000 dunams of forest were burned and over 10,000 people were evacuated from their homes. 

 

 

This disaster made the fire services understand they were not prepared enough and didn’t have enough equipment and made them prepare better in case a disaster like this happens again and buy a lot of equipment. Better be safe than sorry!
