Charateristics:
Area covered: 28 square kilometres
Maximum depth: 9.5 meters
Rivers and underwater springs: 9 rivers flowing into the lake . Xeropotamos is the largest one.

  • It preserves a rich bird fauna: 200 species-including rare and endangered species, protected by international and national law.
  • 2nd most productive lake in terms of fishing in Greece
  • The ONLY lake in Greece that supports an area of lakeside forests of hydrophillic trees, therefore it is considered one of the most rare habitats in Europe.

Pelecanus crispus: even though it is observed throughout the year, its presence is more evident in the spring,  since this endangered species comes to the Lake Orestiada in order to find food, whereas its regualr habitat is the Prespa Lake.
