Troy is a very nice and enjoyable person, but his actions, speeches, and attitudes can come out cruel, and heartless sometimes.

I do not sympathize Troy . His weakness is loving his family. He cheated on his wife, and refuses to help his son, Corey, to sign papers so he can be on a very important football team. Troy’s strength is being the head of his family, and getting a promotion on his trash collector job. He also is very funny, and humorous as well as enjoys telling stories.

This means that he is ready to hit all the negative things away from him by preparing to build a fence. Also, this shows that Troy is well disciplined, and doesn’t let any obstacle come his way.

This poem relates to Troy because he is both a good and a bad father. Corey both loves and hates him too. Troy’s feelings about his son is proud, but also negative. He wants the best for Corey, but Corey doesn’t understand his father’s feelings. Instead, he thinks that Troy does not love him, when in reality, he does.

Theme ( Raisin In The Sun)

The theme of A Raisin in the Sun is Dreams.

“WALTER: Who the hell told you you had to be a doctor? If you so crazy ’bout messing ’round with sick people—then go be a nurse like other women—or just get married and be quiet …”.

Dreams are very important in the play because everyone has their own dreams. It is also mentioned that black adults dreams and children's are very differed. The quote explains this because Beneatha wanted to be a doctor and go to Med School, but Walter had his own expectations and dreams for her.

The theme of “Fences” is racism.

“You think only white fellows got sense enough to drive a truck? That ain’t no paper job. Hell, anybody can drive a truck. How come you got all the whites driving and the coloreds lifting?”

Racism is very important in this play because the time period 1950’s, was all about that. Troy is a trash collector. The whites were driving, and the colors were handling trash. Troy wanted to know why this is. He believes that colors should also have the opportunity to drive too. Also, Troy didn’t make the baseball team when he was little because of his race.

Play Comparison

In the two plays, the theme that is most common would be both racism and family. For example, Troy in Fences, is trying hard to support them by working jobs, while Walter in A Raisin in the Sun, is hoping money would make their families more richer. Both plays take place around the 1950’s where racism was very common. Colored people didn’t have equal opportunities like whites did. Troy was discriminated in his baseball league as a kid, and at his work. Walter’s family was discriminated also with housing and money. Both Troy and Walter wanted to make their families much stronger and wealthier, but each made a stupid decision.

The characters are different because Troy, in Fences, has an affair with Alberta, and loses his connection with the family. Walter in A Raisin in the Sun, makes a mistake and invests in a liquor business which eventually, he loses every dime that he invested in. Both Walter and Troy are the same characters because they both forbid their children to do what they wanted. For instance, Walter didn’t let Beneatha go to medical school, and Troy didn’t let Cory join a football league. Cory’s and Beneatha’s dreams were crushed. Finally, Walter and Troy basically care about themself more than their family.
