Transcendentalists believed in self-reliance, individualism, simplicity, and that nature is divine, also that God is everywhere as well apart of nature. In Emerson's maxims he says that we should never imitate the crowd, but be ourselves, this is an example of transcendentalism's beliefs. Emerson and Thoreau both mentioned the importance of individualism, "individualism is everything, be self-reliant" Self-reliance and independence was another important belief they had. Transcendentalists didn't want to be dependent on society, they urged people to think for themselves and not conform to society. Emerson has another maxim to describe the fear transcendentalists have with our dependence on society. "The civilized man has built a coach, but has lost the use of his feet." Transcendentalists were afraid of this happening if they conformed to society, so they lived simple lives surrounded by nature which they saw god in, because they believed he exists everywhere. The song "Forest" by Twenty One Pilots has some more insights to Transcendentalism. After listening to the song you hear the lyrics, "We stay in place
'Cause we don't want to lose our lives
So let's think of something better." These lyrics sound a lot like Transcendentalism in how it talks about people staying in place, which refers to a routine they have developed, which Thoreau and other Transcendentalists was against because having a routine was similar to conformity. The quote from Thoreau's "Walden" also talks about why he goes to live at Walden Pond, he wanted to be surrounded by nature, and he wanted to live a life that wasn't influenced by society and his daily routine, he saw that as conformityThe song's title also relates back to nature, and the singer is encouraging the listener to go to the forest and "sing a song that nobody knows," which is the same as saying be an individual don't be like everyone else. The singer has a problem with being like everyone else, just like Transcendentalists, and we can tell by how he says "does it bother anyone else that someone else has your name." To sum up Transcendentalism's beliefs, they are the non-conformists of the world as well they prefer a simple life surrounded by nature, because nature is divine. Transcendentalists are there own individuals and very much value their independence and individuality.
