All the members of the family were touched by catholicism, La Loca defied catholicism, performed abortions and refused to go to church

MOMAS - catholic insitution but taken as their own, became bigger than religion itself

Caridad’s spirituality and healthing

Sofi was the most devoted to catholicism but still risked excommunication to get divorced.

Isolation played a spiritual practice in the novel, La Loca spent all her time by the river

Caridad leaves and goes to the cave. The community sought her for healing

Caridad moved outside the coloniality of gender the most, Fe was the most complicit to the coloniality of gender

Esperanza was too big to fit into the category woman

Reference to a lack of jobs, narc economy, factory with pollutants, required that you move away from your home. Living in poverty but rich in spirituality and history of land, kinship, community.

The characters are destined to die without reason like in the Greek myth of Sofi

Chicana feminism type humor - absurdity

La Loca - nonhuman / anti ableist character

Fe cleaned weapons in the basement that were used in the war in Saudi Arabia

Omniscient narration is like Lugones’ world traveling, humor, irony

The novel is about being destined to be discarded. It’s building yourself up (uprising like La Loca) from coloniality. Sofia = knowledge. Philosophie - love of knowledge

Fe - faith

Caridad - charity

Esperanza - hope

Knowing is healing healing is knowing. To heal the colonial wound you have to put colectivity back together (and yourself). You have to ask why they die. Susto (fright) is part of catholic-hybrid spirituality in which the soul has been spooked out and has to be called back in (put back together). The art of healing is a spiritual path, it’s a feminist value of decolonization. Spirituality is the chanel (Caridad). To set somebody’s bones (putting the community back together) seeing people’s energy (seeing who you want to hang out with and why). Faculty of prophecy - transform the future. Predictions are based on neutral objectivity. The novel is a de-colonialist way of knowing.

Masculinity is a barrier to loving each other differently
