The Japanese surprise attacked the harbor in Hawaii with a variety of fighter planes and bombers with a major focus on trying to sink the American fleet of battleships. All eight of the American battleships were damaged and four of the eight were sunk in the harbor. The Japanese attack also damaged three American destroyers and three American cruisers. In all, 2402 Americans were killed and another 1282 were wounded. The intent of the Japanese attack was to inflict a preventative and decisive blow to the American Pacific naval fleet in order to allow itself free reign over the territory it sought in the South Pacific. The attack was profoundly shocking to the American public due to the magnitude of the attack and the fact that Japan surprise attacked the United States without issuing a formal declaration of war first. In a statement after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, United States President Truman stated that the "Japanese began the war from the air at Pearl Harbor... I was one of those who felt that there were a number of cogent reasons to question the wisdom of such an act.... During his recitation of the relevant facts, I had been conscious of a feeling of depression and so I voiced to him my grave misgivings, first on the basis of my belief that Japan was already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary, and second because I thought that our country should avoid shocking world opinion by the use of a weapon whose employment was, I thought, no longer mandatory as a measure to save American lives. It was my belief that Japan was, at that very moment, seeking some way to surrender with a minimum loss of 'face.' The Secretary was deeply perturbed by my attitude, almost angrily refuting the reasons I gave for my quick conclusions.

On August 6th, 1945 the American B-29 plane, Enola Gay, dropped the atomic bomb Little Boy on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The bombing instantly killed 70,000 to 80,000 Japanese in the city and tens of thousands more due to radiation exposure. Three days later on August 9th, the United States dropped another atomic bomb, named the Fat Man, on the city of Nagasaki. the bombing of Nagasaki would kill another 40,000 people. It was set to occur in October of 1945 and if it had taken place it would have been the largest amphibious attack in human history. The estimated American casualties for the invasion ranged wildly from one hundred thousand American casualties to over one million. The Unites States Armed Forces invaded the island in hopes of using it as a staging ground towards the larger invasion of the Japanese main islands. It was defended by determined and loyal Japanese forces. However, the American victory was assured due to their overwhelming control of the air and sheer number of forces. Of the 22,060 Japanese soldiers entrenched on the island, 18,844 died either from fighting or by ritual suicide. Only 216 were captured during the course of battle.
