He never told anyone what he was doing, and even at that, he didn't know exactly what he was doing. He was doing his job, and he only knew slivers of the passengers and where they were going.

They say that they tried to block out the people and just think of different things. They said they tried to think of them as cargo because of the situations they are in. No these aren't logical as they are still doing these things even if they don't want to think about it.

Walter Stier's defense was that he didn't know what was happening, which likely isn't entirely true, as there are some places where he seems to hint at him having at least a suspicion over what was going on in the concentration camps
