This theory says that performance is linear. This means that the more arousal there is in an athlete, the better the performance. This theory can only be applied to skills that have been well learned in the past. The theory explains that athletes new to the sport do not perform well under pressure and their skill level decreases due to not being used to performing under pressure. However, experienced athletes perform better under pressure because they have superior skills and they can control their stress levels.

This is a type of bad arousal because as seen in the video David Beckham reacts in a negative way to the other athlete performing a fowl on him. When he goes down to the floor David reacts by kicking the other player when he is on the ground and he kicks him in the leg this then shows he is showing bad representations of arousal.
