The Shining is a story about a family (the Torrances) stuck in a hotel during the winter and insanity ensures. It's an interesting look in the influence of the past. Through out the book Jack Torrance and his wife Wendy, two of the main characters, reflects on their childhood, and how they're trying to give their son a better one. The past is also seen as the ghosts of former guests, and staff appear revealing the history of the hotel that their trapped in. The background of the novel is interesting as Stephen King writes his fear of his alcoholism and his upcoming fatherhood into the story. My opinion on this novel is that it slowly dragged on and then the pace gets faster and faster until you're completely immersed.
