This is when Rainsford woke up to the sound of hounds on the morning of the 3rd day and realized that his death is inevitable.
"At daybreak Rainsford, lying near the swamp was awakened by the sound that made him know that he had new things to fear about... It was the baying of a pack of hounds. Rainsford knew he could do one of two things. He could stay where he was and wait. That was suicide. He could flee. That was postponing the inevitable."

This is Rainsford's first night in the forest and his first day in the hunting game. He thinks confidently that he will be able to trick General Zaroff by making a very confusing path. Then he wakes up the next day finding a figure walking towards the tree, and that figure is General Zaroff. Rainsford is obviously shocked because he thought he made this path and Zaroff wouldn't find him but now he faces conflict with the fact that Zaroff might kill him and he has to find a quick solution to save himself or come up with another plan

This quote portrays conflict, because as the third day of hunting begins, Rainsford is awakened by a pack of hounds. That moment he knew he wouldn't make it out of this 'game' alive. This was also the moment that he was quickly thinking what to do with this fight or flight moment. This shows conflict as internal and external conflict because he's quickly thinking of what to do with himself, and at the same time he was about to die.
