He thinks confidently that he will be able to trick General Zaroff by making a very confusing path. Then he wakes up the next day finding a figure walking towards the tree, and that figure is General Zaroff. That moment he knew he wouldn't make it out of this 'game' alive. This was also the moment that he was quickly thinking what to do with this fight or flight moment.
