In his poem, Marshall Davis asserts that the digital world is consuming us and making us less human through his use of colorful, emphatic word choice. An example of this would be that "if Im an amateur person as long as I have a 'pro' file" he uses pro as in comparing pro to amateur like a professional but what he really means is that you need a profile as in a social media platform. This use of word choice strengthens his claims throughout the poem by providing an image for the audience to imagine how their choices are actively making them less human.

The word choice Jones uses heavily relates to his claim that technology is taking over the world in his poem, "Touchscreen." He uses wordplay of technology terms and highlights how much the world changed since technology became significant in our lives. An example is iTouch and I touch, one means to come in contact with, and the other meaning the old Apple product. The difference between these two is that one meaning is actually connecting with the outside world, while the other is simply used to distract someone from the outside world. Another example is "I face Facebook more than books face me, hoping to book face-to-faces."

For example when Jones states, "I face Facebook more than books face me," he suggests that there is more electronic exposure now, in comparison to the amount of books that were read in the past. For example, when Jones states, "We used to sprint to pick blackberries; now we run to the sprint store to pick blackberries; it's scary." he suggests that society has become too engaged in technology saying how people used to go out to get blackberries from the store but now people go to the store to buy phones or "blackberries". The double meaning behind the word blackberries helps further prove the difference between how society used to be and how it is today.

For example, when Jones states, "I face Facebook more than books face me, hoping to book face-to-faces," he points out that by looking for the connection we crave on social media, we are in fact isolating ourselves from human interaction. The picture he paints with his wordplay illustrates the absurdity of the fact that we choose to spend more time by ourselves staring at a screen instead of other people, then wonder why we don't have strong connections with people like we used to.

For example, Jones states that, "it used to be hard to connect when friends formed clicks but it's even more difficult to connect now that clicks form friends". He is highlighting how we are all so focused on our lives in our devices, that we aren't making anything for the ones outside of them. There is simply no more human interaction as a consequence of our screens constantly in our faces.

But now its even harder because the "clicks", meaning technology are how we make friends in todays society.

In the poem "Touchscreen," the author, Marshall jones creates the point that while the world is closer than ever with instant communication to the other side of the world, people are more emotional distant than ever. He makes the point that as the world grows closer, people grow apart by using incredible wordplay and emphasizing phrases in different ways to create different meanings to more effectively create emotions in the reader. One of these examples is when he states "Doubled over we used to sit in tree tops till we swung down and stood upright, then someone slipped a disk; now we are doubled over at desktops." In this Marshall goes back and illuminates our ancestry as nomadic people hanging in trees, and then someone got hurt and slipped a disk and now we are staying still in a chair. Another meaning of the phrase "Slipped a disk" is to slip a disk into a DVD drive in a computer, and now instead of resting because of an injury we stay still in a chair, 12 inches away from a screen, wasting our lives away with meaningless tasks that we repeat for 6 hours on end, wasting our lives away day by day.

In the poem "Touchscreen", Marshall Jones asserts the lack of human interaction because of social media and new technology through wordplay. Jones writes "I can't hear the sound of mother nature speaking over all this tweeting, and along with it is our ability to feel as it's fleeting." This quote suggests how social media consumes our daily lives and we don't focus on the real world anymore. The second part of the quote also suggests the "interactions" we have on social media don't provide the same feeling we would have if we had a real human interaction outside of technology. He plays with the word "tweeting" to get his point across because tweeting is a common term used to describe posting stuff on social media, but we don't go outside enough to hear the birds tweeting. Jones choice of wordplay provides a more meaningful impact on the readers because there's terms we understand more and it emphasizes how distracted we are by technology.

Jones is nudging the readers towards the thought that any contact at all, even with a screen, is what most humans need to feel real. The double meaning used here is mocking "iPhone" by saying "iTouch". Feeling so connected to technology, all people want to do is touch a screen. Instead, we should be exploring and touching the real world. Other real objects and people also make us feel human, rather than just screens.

For example, when Jones states, "... from the Garden of Eden to the branches of Macintosh. This is when his wordplay comes shows because when he says, "Apple picking has always come with a great cost," he actually means phones and other products from the apple brand with cost being related to prices of these products. This quote gains an even deeper meaning when you realize that with his connection to the biblical story, he is also suggesting that humans picking these modern-day apple products is similar in effect to Adam and Eve taking the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge which caused them to be cast away from the garden.

For example, when Jones states, "from the Garden of Eden to the branches of Macintosh, Apple picking has always come at a great cost." He suggests that Macintosh, a series of computers produced by Apple, can be compared to the Garden of Eden--beautiful but filled with temptations. He compares the two with the phrase "Apple picking", using the double meaning of the phrase to connect the two ideas. In the context of the story of the Garden of Eden, this is referring to the picking of the (physical) apple that was believed to have led to the doom of humanity. In the context of Macintosh, this refers to the purchasing and developing of Apple products. By comparing these two kinds of "apple picking," Jones implies that society's focus on technology will be the hubris that leads to humanity's downfall.

In this poem, the author declares that humans obsessions and connections with their devices is steering us away from real world, face to face connection. For example, when the author states "We used to sprint to pick and store blackberries. Now we run to the Sprint Store to pick blackberries." In one sense he is talking about we used to pick blackberries as in the fruit, and now we go to the sprint store searching for a new phone. Through this wordplay, the author uses this phrase to contrast 2 different perspectives and views on how our worlds values have changed. The author rephrases and compares 2 different storylines of different time periods in order to make his point that unlike old times, we endlessly search for connection through our phones. Instead of searching for satisfaction in the usage of our devices, we need to thrive for real human connection.

In the spoken word poem, "Touchscreen", Marshall Davis Jones emphasizes the toxic reality of using screens through wordplay. For example, when Jones states, "-with 3,000 friends online i can only count 5 in real life- why wouldnt i spend more time in a real world where there are more people who 'like' me?" he suggests that more people have friends online more than having friends in person and how that is a toxic way to go theough life.
