Before I got a part time job, I always wondered how people had time for them whilst also attending university work. However, I know regret not having one sooner! I worked over summer in second year and earnt £800, but it was 100 hours of work only and it looked amazing on my CV. Now, for the whole of third year I’ve had an 8-12 hour part time job and it is really easy to balance, you just have to be organised. I can admit, it doesn’t help when managers change your hours and give you overtime without asking and I did struggle when they put my hours up to 16-25 hours. But the normal 8 hours a week gives me around £300 a month, which nearly pays for my rent – so other than food I am able to save a lot of student finance! I do not recommend more than 16 hours, especially during exam and coursework hand in time and so do universities.

Yes, student finance is for living whilst at university – but like I said before if you plan it well you can save money from it! Just make sure you are eating properly, keeping up with bills and leaving some for things to do with friends! In fact, I’ve made you guys a little budget plan (go back to the blog page, its under this!)

If there’s something you love doing and you can make money from it, why not sell it? I know people at university that sell art, video editing and vintage clothes! There’s an amazing website for this, called Fiverr which helps freelances sell their products easily. There’s eBay and Depop are good for these too.

Except from extreme circumstances, where universities can help anyway, there are little ways the university can help you! For example, in second year I was given £900 without even applying for anything, they simply analysed my student finance and put it straight into my bank account! This isn’t available for everyone obviously, but it does help build the gap and give support to those who need it so they can have the same experiences! Also, my university offer free black wells, which has actually saved me £100 for Uni books!
