Observe student behavior by identifying and documenting signs of struggle such as difficulty with letter-sound correspondence, fluency and comprehension, inability to answer questions after a read-aloud, and problems with writing simple sentences, using a learning inventory for about six weeks.

Once the observations are complete, two formal assessments will determine in what specific areas the student needs support. The first assessment would be the DIBELS 8th Edition for first grade. In the second assessment, the student will complete a writing sample to determine their writing ability.

Step 3 Provided Targeted Instruction for Special Needs Learners

Provide targeted instruction in a small group or one-on-one. This targeted instruction would include letter recognition, decoding CVC words, repeated practice, reading simple decodable texts with follow-up questions to provide reading comprehension.

Step 4 Classroom Support

At the beginning of each session, the student(s) would be encouraged to develop a growth mindset to keep the student engaged and not feel anxious. These targeted practice sessions would last for 15 minutes each day and continue for six weeks. The student will be provided hands-on manipulatives like flash cards and visual aids to develop consistent and focused practice. Additionally, the student would be able to practice their handwriting and proper letter formation.

Step 6

Students will be progress monitored every two weeks and adjustments made to the targeted instruction using running records and continued observations.

Parents and support staff will be communicated with and if a referral is needed the next steps will be taken to get additional interventions if needed.

If Identified as ELL

English Language Learners (ELLs) who are new to the school system, will be evaluated by the English Language Development (ELD) Team, prior to grade placement upon enrollment, and receive either push-in or pull-out support during the school day.

Prior to the end of the six weeks. Submit a request to the school Testing Coordinator to set up a meeting with the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) to review the learner's needs.
