In our minds, we pictured a speech-language pathologist having a one-on-one with a patient in a room. You can see in the left picture a speech pathologist with a newborn baby; in this field, speech pathologists also help premature babies with their food intake, weak sucking, delayed swallowing, and coordination with their overall being. After this lesson, I've been reminded that becoming an SLP isn't just as simple of teaching or playing with our patients. Those are just a part of something even bigger. Despite this lesson reminding us of the possible challenges that we must face and go through, it also somehow fueled something within me to keep on pushing forwards and to really be passionate about what I want to do now and what I am planning to do in the future.

this lesson made me realize more how, as SLPS, we really have to connect with different people from different walks of life. not just our patients, but their families as well. it further more emphasized how important it is, that as aspiring SLPs, one must already have this thought planted in their hearts : despite how tiring it may seem to communicate with a huge amount of people from time to time, how rigorous it is to write thousands of notes, we can’t forget the rewarding feeling of being able to help people find their voice.

My key takeaway from today’s SLP1042 discussion, after completing the padlet activity with the class, is that while speech-language pathology is often visualized as primarily centered on pediatric sessions, therapy, and case management, the profession's scope is far broader.

I understood more deeply that an SLP’s responsibilities also include roles in screening, identification, and prevention, which involve a wide range of activities addressing communication and swallowing disorders (and the like). I also learned that while SLPs can identify developmental and communicative markers, they do not diagnose conditions such as autism spectrum disorders; instead, they provide valuable input that supports the diagnostic process conducted by other professionals or doctors. It's inspiring to think that the SLP profession offers a way for individuals who might otherwise be overlooked to be given a second chance at meaningful communication and improved quality of life. This expanded understanding has further motivated me to pursue the profession, not only to work with children, but with the commitment to serve individuals across the entire lifespan.

For today's session about what constitutes the scope of practice a speech language pathologist has, it revealed to me the not-so-noticeable aspects of their responsibilites, not just the typical notion of "playing with kids. Aside from being responsible for assessing if a person is needed of therapy in the first place as well as planning and developing rehabilitation sessions, an SLP has a duty of also being a consultant for parents of their patients to not only advise them of their child's progress and be able to adjust their therapy plans to better accommodate their patients and fine-tune their session however it is needed.

This made me open my eyes towards the fact that SLPs have to be versatile and be levelheaded to properly conduct their duties and responsibilites to their patients and their families.

One realization I had from the lesson is that speech-language pathologists do much more than just help people speak or swallow properly, they are actually part of a larger healthcare and educational team. SLPs often collaborate closely with doctors, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and even the client’s family members. I used to think their work was mostly one-on-one with the client, but I learned that they also attend meetings, share updates, and help build treatment plans alongside other professionals. 🩷

From the discussion yesterday, we've realized that being a Speech-Language Pathologist is more than just toys and colors and everything whimsical and child-like, rather it is about improving the quality of life of our patients in need, whether it'd be an 8-year old child that has speech delay, or a 57-year old grandmother who has just suffered a stroke and has problems with communicating their needs. Other than that, it is also expected of us to be meticulous and mindful of our patients' progress in a professional manner by making reports and providing documentation. It is also known that speech-language pathologists never work alone, as we work with our fellow SLPs, OTs, PTs, etc.

One thing that was emphasized to me during our class is how our role connects with the community. We may spend four years in school preparing, but some patients spend their whole lives waiting for someone to help them find their voice, communicate their needs, or simply be understood. It made me realize that our journey as students is not just about finishing a degree, it’s about preparing ourselves to meet the long-awaited hopes of patients and their families. :)

After finishing our lesson on what SLPs do, I was able to understand more about what the profession entails and what is expected of us as future SLPs. Learning these fundamentals and specifics is essential, as these are the very things we will be applying everyday in our future sessions.
