To me, this is what a speech-language pathologist looks like: someone in scrubs, sitting in a bright and welcoming therapy room, working closely with a child. She holds up flashcards with simple words, guiding the child to speak, and interact. It’s about the patience, encouragement, and focus she gives so the child feels supported while practicing communication. This image shows the heart of what an SLP does: helping children find their voice in a warm, caring and the Thomasian way.

We imagine people who find joy in being able to help others cope and learn at their own pace without judgement, to be able to be a form of help without making them feel different or strange compared to others.

My perception of an SLP is someone who serves their patients with the highest level of care, making every session both fun and beneficial. They create an environment that best supports each patient’s learning and growth and because SLPs are in such high demand, many of them work with a large number of patients, especially in areas where there may be only one SLP available for the entire community. That’s why I included in the image the thought bubble of the SLP thinking of her other patients showing not just children, but also adults. Even though SLPs often carry heavy caseloads, they never let that prevent them from giving 100% to every individual they work with. - Annika Navales

Prior to the discussion, my first thought about speech-language pathology was the assessment and diagnosis of clients through fun activities, but I didn't realize how demanding it is, specifically, the preparation of sessions, writing numerous reports, coordinating with other professionals, counseling with the client's guardians, and more. With the nature of the profession thoroughly explained to us, it made me realize that SLP is more than just playing with kids; it is not an easy path, but it is truly fulfilling and meaningful work.

I already knew that rehabilitation can be quite challenging due to its multi-step nature, which requires patience and dedication from therapists and patients. However, I've come to a realization that a better way of approaching it is having to stick with a structured approach that would be fixed with honesty when it comes to your patient's progress, behavior, etc. By fostering trust and consistency throughout the long and complex process, we can aid our future patients more efficiently when they are trying to recover and regain a function of theirs.

Romina D. Dalisay — 1SLPB

My key takeaway from today’s SLP1042 discussion, after completing the padlet activity with the class, is that while speech-language pathology is often visualized as primarily centered on pediatric sessions, therapy, and case management, the profession's scope is far broader.

I understood more deeply that an SLP’s responsibilities also include roles in screening, identification, and prevention, which involve a wide range of activities addressing communication and swallowing disorders (and the like). I also learned that while SLPs can identify developmental and communicative markers, they do not diagnose conditions such as autism spectrum disorders; instead, they provide valuable input that supports the diagnostic process conducted by other professionals or doctors. It's inspiring to think that the SLP profession offers a way for individuals who might otherwise be overlooked to be given a second chance at meaningful communication and improved quality of life. This expanded understanding has further motivated me to pursue the profession, not only to work with children, but with the commitment to serve individuals across the entire lifespan.

Lana Minerva B. Mercado - 1SLPB

For today's session about what constitutes the scope of practice a speech language pathologist has, it revealed to me the not-so-noticeable aspects of their responsibilites, not just the typical notion of "playing with kids. Aside from being responsible for assessing if a person is needed of therapy in the first place as well as planning and developing rehabilitation sessions, an SLP has a duty of also being a consultant for parents of their patients to not only advise them of their child's progress and be able to adjust their therapy plans to better accommodate their patients and fine-tune their session however it is needed.

This made me open my eyes towards the fact that SLPs have to be versatile and be levelheaded to properly conduct their duties and responsibilites to their patients and their families.

I used to think their work was mostly one-on-one with the client, but I learned that they also attend meetings, share updates, and help build treatment plans alongside other professionals. 🩷

Other than that, it is also expected of us to be meticulous and mindful of our patients' progress in a professional manner by making reports and providing documentation. It is also known that speech-language pathologists never work alone, as we work with our fellow SLPs, OTs, PTs, etc.

The current demand for the profession, its dire need to support clients who have waited for days, months, and years for intervention, is an occurrence that needs an action. What was most striking was how the job of SLPs demands not only clinical expertise but empathy, patience, and teamwork. The process shows that SLPs truly deal with the person as a whole, not just the disorder. This lesson motivated me to appreciate the profession even more. It taught me that being an SLP is not just about devotion, but about learning continuously, and caring about clients.

I came to realize that the heart of speech-language pathology is not just about articulation or language development, but about restoring a person’s dignity, connection, and ability to fully participate in their world. Witnessing how painful it can be to have intact thoughts but no reliable means of expression showed me the true importance of communication disorders — whether in speech, language, voice, fluency, or swallowing. What inspired me most was understanding how powerful it can be when an SLP provides someone with the right tools, whether that’s through evidence-based intervention, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), or therapy tailored to their cognitive-linguistic needs. For me, choosing SLP is more than a career path; it’s a calling rooted in empathy, science, and service — a way to bridge barriers, advocate for underserved populations, and give people not just their voices, but their chance to be understood. I want to be part of that solution, one client, one family, and one voice at a time.

From the lecture, I gained a deeper understanding of the profession and its wide scope. I learned that it is not limited to children—it also involves a structured process that ensures proper and thorough care, including assessments, treatments, referrals, formal reports, addressing language barriers, family involvement, and more. I also discovered that access to SLPs in the country, especially in provincial areas, is limited, often leading to long waiting times of several months.
