One quote that stood out for me was: "We cannot assume that all of our students possess the more advanced knowledge necessary to work with grammatically complex sentences..." I think this is a very important reminder, especially for for those of us to which reading came easily. As a "reader" I think I definitely took for granted my knowledge of words, phrases, clauses, sentences and cohesive devices as I didn't struggle to access meaning when engaging with text on my own. However, for many students, especially those with comprehension needs, this does not come easily. So it is the teacher's job to prepare and preview text in order to help these learners fully comprehend the texts they encounter in school.

Julia Salamone

The importance of being intentional as a practitioner. Despite the historical and inconsistent views regarding the teaching of syntax, explicit instruction IS necessary. Educators must be thoughtful in preparing lessons and intentional with how they prepare the text prior to student's learning experiences. It is beneficial to seek opportunities to optimize the link between writing and comprehension. "Informed educators" are essential!

I absolutely love Stanley Fish's quote, "Before the words slide into their slots, they are just discrete items, pointing everywhere and nowhere. Since the words are nested in the places 'ordained' for them -'ordained' is a wonderful word that points to the inexorable logic of syntactic structures-they are tied by ligatures of relationships to one another. They are subjects or objects or actions or descriptives or indications of manner, and as such they combine into a statement about the world, that is, into a meaning that one can contemplate, admire, reject, or refine." This passage relates the role of syntactic structures as a vehicle through which meaning becomes accessible to the reader, and it makes me feel incredibly blessed to have had access to literacy!

The importance of helping students work with syntax to support comprehension. Educators need to realize the potential challenges students may have in constructing meaning from a text. Thereby, it is important for educators to teach students how to break down the levels of language processing from the surface code, to textbase, and the mental model.
