The story narrates as a young student, mentions his earliest memories, where he attended a large school and where the principal acts as pastor of the church who enforces school rules.
William Wilson was a student with much superiority to his classmates, with the exception of a student. According to the narrator, this student bears exactly the same name: William Wilson. This second William Wilson interferes with the mastery of the narrator over his classmates, thus becoming for the narrator an object of fear and competition. This rivalry becomes more for the narrator when he learns that they joined the school the same day and had equal dress styles, many older students believe they are brothers. However, the narrator rejects any connection between him and his rival. One night the narrator enters the room of William Wilson to play a joke. Shining the light of his lamp on the face of his rival, the narrator believes he sees a different William Wilson, a unique face in the dark. Terrified by the facial transformation he imagines, the narrator runs out of the room.
Three years later, the narrator moves to the university of Oxford, where it picks up the vice of the game of the cards. After two years at Oxford, the narrator meets a young man named Glendinning and makes it his next game goal. By allowing him to win at the beginning, the narrator attracts him with the prospect of more success to a great party that he has organized. At this party, Glendinning plays but loses all his money. Suddenly a stranger intrudes on the party this man reveals to the narrator was a scam artist and quickly retired. The advertisement ruins the narrator and leaves the university.
