Jersey County's population went from 12,091 in 1860 to 12,682 in 1920. Illinois' largest state park Pere Marquette was also founded in 1918 known as Piasa Bluffs State Park which includes 8,050 acres. In 1901, the Jerseyville High School offered classic, business, and scientific courses of study. It even had an astronomical observatory.
