Paragraph Shrinking

Description- Paragraph shrinking is used to help students read. It allows the students to break down each paragraph and find the main idea and key points all while taking turns reading within their group.

Advantages-
-Helps students work on fluency.
-Allows students to work with other peers who can assist them.
-Allows students to work on summarizing main idea.

Disadvantages-
-Students who struggle to read may be more shy to read aloud.
-The teacher can not work with group so more mistakes can be missed.
-Some paragraphs may be longer than others allowing for less practice for students.

ELL students-
-To modify this for an ELL student the teacher could have the ELL student work individually and use an e-book so the story is read to him or her. They can write the main points down and then compare with another student.
http://www.readingrockets.org/content/pdfs/paragraph_shrinking.pdf

Description- This helps students understand questions throughout the story. This helps students understand that answers are in the text and allows students the chance to go back and find the answers using context clues.

Advantages-
-Improves reading comprehension
-Helps students to think beyond the text.
-Can be done in groups, a whole class, or individually.

Disadvantages-
-Students who are lower on the reading scale may struggle to go back and assess the text.
- If this is done as partner work one students may be doing all the work.
-Questions might not be as critical as they should be.

ELL students-
If there are any ELL students in the classroom, the teacher can make sure that the class does this activity as a whole class and she can project the story on the smart-board and have the paragraphs read aloud.

http://www.readingrockets.org/strategies/question_answer_relationship

Description- In this activity students are placed in a main group this is known as their "home" group. Students are given a topic and then they have to branch off and discuss with other class members who have different topics. Once the time is up the students have to go back to their "home" groups and teach what they learned.

Advantages-
-Allows students to collaborate with peers.
-Helps build comprehension
-Helps improve problem solving skills and listening skills.

Disadvantages-
-This can be a time consuming activity.
-If a student is on a lower reading level the information present may be miscued.
-Has to be done as a whole class.

ELL students-
- The teacher can have the ELL work with a partner. The partner can write down the information and when the information is presented the ELL students can verbally speak it. Then both students are equally participating.

http://www.readingrockets.org/strategies/jigsaw

Description-This strategy helps students gain a deeper meaning of new words. Students think of words related and place them in order according to degree of meaning. This can be done in groups or individually.

Advantages-
-Allows students to gain a deeper knowledge on meanings of new words.
-Helps students realize the different meaning of words that all could mean the same thing.
- Helps students to be more precise in their writing because their vocabulary is being expanded.

Disadvantages-
-Students may not place the words in the correct order.
-Does not show the immediate connection between the synonym and meaning of the word.
- Students will have to take the time to look up the meaning of the new words.

ELL students- The teacher can start the word list for the student. This will help them to see what needs to come next and the teacher could have the students draw a picture of the word instead of writing the word. The student still shows what the meaning of the word is by drawing it.

http://www.readingrockets.org/strategies/semantic_gradients

Description- This activity allows students to focus on spelling. Students can go back through a text they have read in the past and look for word patterns and patterns of meaning.

Advantages-
-Helps students expand on vocabulary.
-Teaches students meaning of root words.
-Shows how words are used in different context.

Disadvantages-
-This activity would be hard for students to do in small groups.
-The student would need to be fluent readers to be able to go back and find the different patterns of the word.
-Would need to be an ending lesson for the unit being taught.

ELL student-
Have this student work with the teacher. The teacher can read the story and when the student hears the word being used in a different context the student can tell the teacher to stop. The student can then record the word in their writing journal.

http://www.readingrockets.org/strategies/word_hunts

Description- Students fill out a chart as they go through the given text and record answers given from several different sources. Once this is filled out they are to write a summary about their findings.

Advantages-
-Strengthens reading skills and critical thinking skills.
-Builds upon students prior knowledge.
-Can be used as an assessment tool to see how much students have learned about a topic.

Disadvantages-
-If there is a student who struggles to listen and transfer knowledge they will struggle with this activity.
-If the student did not record enough information in the chart they can not write a detailed paragraph at the end of the activity.

ELL students-The student can make a powerpoint instead of writing it down in paragraph form. This will still ensure the student is getting all the knowledge and instead of summarzing the whole chart the student can summarize each column.

http://www.readingrockets.org/strategies/inquiry_chart
