Students put phones in "Phone Hotel" during exams. However I have been finding that students are checking their phones and then asking to go to the bathroom at an alarming rate. I suspect something else is going on in the building other than UTI's or Chronh's . Our student at risk survey has shown that students are able to buy drugs at school is this what is happening? I am now requesting that students put their phones in the phone hotel every day, and not just during tests.

I use the "Cell Hotel" in all of my classes. Each student is assigned a number and is expected to put their cell phone in their appropriate spot in the "hotel". There are 4 options: 1) put your phone in the hotel for the entire block and use your device; 2) use your phone as your device (because it is dead or broken or home) and put an orange card in their slot; 3) charge their phone in the power strip next to the cell hotel and put a yellow card in the slot; 4) put a red card in their slot if they don't have their phone with them today (if they are seen with their phone in class, a discipline report will be given to their AP).

I have clear expectations about proper use of devices in my class. They are listed in the Class Expectations and they are posted in the room. I still have many students trying to do homework, playing games, or reading/sending texts. Unless I am walking around the room, I am not able to see what they are on. They have learned to quickly close out the tabs as I walk towards them. I remind them that their class participation grade is negatively effected by their improper use. This sometimes solves the issue and sometimes doesn't.

I think each teacher should have a backup Chromebook and charger for when a student doesn't have a device or needs to charge. Too many students come to class needing to charge devices. Without the device, it is pretty much impossible to participate in class effectively. In terms of my class policies, I discussed them with both parents and students at the beginning of the year. I use the policy in the handbook, but find that I am always policing in the classroom. There seems to be a disconnect between the handbook and that we shouldn't confiscate the student's property.

I read a note here about helicopter parenting. In my own children's high school they have had this since middle school. Yes at the beginning there is some helicoptering.. but after that what it does is open conversation between parent and child. I like knowing where my kid is at in school, I don't want to know when it is too late. I feel in the end the iparent really works out well between parent and child. This also opens opportunity for parent to email teacher earlier than a parent teacher conference. Win Win both ways.
