Craft and Chat is one of the events during Black History Month held by the SCAD Mental Health Office, which took place in Norris Hall on February 14th. The reason why I attended this event is that I'm obsessed with handmade projects, and making an eye pillow sounded useful for meditation when I'm in the mood.

Q2: What did the event talked about?

The counseling center staffs introduced themselves at the beginning of the event, and they briefly talked about the instructions for the eye pillow making process: choosing the fabrics, cutting the fabrics into two pieces, sewing the three edges with thread, adding filler foams and sewing up the remaining edge. Speaking of kente patterns, they said that each colors and shapes have different meanings behind the Ghana culture. For instance, black represents strength, while green and yellow symbolize harvest and wealth.

Q3: What I learned in this event?

Since I came to the United States, I have met a lot of people of different races and cultures, but when it comes to black culture, I know very little about it. But through this workshop, I at least learned something about their culture, and it was worth it. I think that explaining part of the culture visually is a good way to record the culture and preserve it, because visual representations have a deeper impression on people.

Q4: How will I apply the information you learned to your studies and major?

I would like to try to translate literal elements into patterns to present them in my major classes as well, just as the elements in the kente pattern are symbolic of a part of the culture. This workshop also reminded me of the feelings experienced by multicultural people as mentioned in my previous portfolio project, and I intend to re-express my project using motifs to explain my theme in a new way.
