Performance assessment tasks assess process and product. The student develops conceptual understanding in a real world context. It evaluates what the student understands, what they know and how they can apply it in a real world situation. Examples of math topics that can lend themselves well to this assessment can be trigonometry problems using the angle (sin, cos, tan) to calculate the height of objects such as a building. It can be used to solve proportions or fractions such as someone eating 1/4 of a pie, how much is left.

Inquiry based assessment evaluates conceptual understanding where open inquiry/questions are asked. It can be use at the beginning of a module to see what the students already know. It can be used during the unit to evaluate understanding and/or instructional improvement, and it can be used at the end to assess student understanding and achievement

Self assessment helps the student become more aware of their own learning and understanding. It can be used at the beginning of a unit to determine what they already know. It can be used during the section to see what they understand/what they need to improve on and it can be used at the end to check their knowledge on all the concepts.

Visible thinking allows the student to share their thoughts and ideas on a topic. It also informs the instructor how much a student understands and knows. It can be used at the beginning or end of a lesson to check for understanding and/or it can be used during a lesson. An example might be a think pair share routine.

Graphic Organizers increase learning as a tool to support (visually) students’ thinking and learning processes. Some examples for math might be: •The Frayer model which includes definitions, characteristics, examples and non examples. •Venn diagrams to compare and contrast 2 or more ideas. •The web for brainstorming, organizing ideas and concepts, showing examples, making connections •The classification diagram for organizing and classifying information. •Organizational chart (looks like a tree chart) for hierarchy, classification and showing relationships.

Developing Core Skills

Some core skills to develop could be: communication, research skills, and self management. Teamwork, inquiry, and presenting/sharing are a few things that can help improve communication. Research skills can be developed through inquiry, the use of technology, text books, discovery, etc. If the students are engaged and going through these processes listed above, it should help with self management. In the future I will do my best to incorporate engaging, visual and/or hands on lessons and assignments so the students can improve on critical thinking, teamwork, communication skills and more.
