"How's it going?" or asking about the book.  This turns the conference into a worksheet.

Instead, ask about the reader:
"What kind of thinking have you been doing?"
"Show me how you--"
Teach students to talk about the reading process (model and coach):
student' "I'm paying attention to how the pics and words go together."

Compliment:  "You are a reader who ___"

Leave them with feedback.
"When you are ___ you can____."
