In 1787, the constitution was being written. Northwest ordinance banned slaver in the Western territory. Some slave holding states threatened to walk out of the constitution if slavery was threatened. This argument could lead to 2 different counters instead of one. Even though they were threatened, they didn't give up and tried to make slavery illegal. This is an important even because again, its about slavery and how the northern and the southern wanted different things and ha disagreements which led to the war.

Great Britain gave up their land holding (west of the Appalachian mountains) known as the Northwest territory. The Northwest Ordinance was created and they hoped to get more people in this territory and create more states. 3-5 new states were created from the Northwest territory. They provided for civil liberties but did not allow slavery. They hoped the territory will be settled by people from the south. Enslaved workers of their own, could not join the growing abolition of the North. People in the south wanted slavery to continue in the new states. This is a kay event because it was again about slavery and whether or not t should be a thing or not. This caused people to have arguments about this topic and it led to the civil war.

In 1793, the south had an invention of the cotton gin, which was a major industry and increased the need for enslaved labor. North tried to tell the South to stop trading slaves and stop using slaves. But, this ended up leading to a bigger debate. This is a key event because it was about how the south and the north disagreed and how it let them to have controversy that got really bad and end up turning into the civil war.

Missouri wanted to become part of the Louisiana purchase and be a new state. But, Missouri applying to become a state turned into a big debate because people were arguing if Missouri should become a free state or not. The northern side said that it should be a free state because of Missouri is in the North and slavery is banned in the north. The south was mad that the north was trying to ban slavery all together. A compromise was made by Henry Clay and he stated that Missouri would become a slave state and there would be a line drawn below Missouri and any state that is below that line will be a slave state. This event led to the civil war because it was the start of the debate of slavery and whether or not slavery should be banned all together or not or just in some states.

Abolitionists sent thousands of anti-slavery petitions to Washington D.C. Congress decided to avoid the petitions in 1836. In 1831, Nat turner staged a slave rebellion and more than 50 white people were killed. In 1846, A war with Mexico broke out and the U.S ultimately won the war. There was a debate about the Mexican cession and whether or not it should be a free state or a slave state. The north thought is should be a free territory and voters of the state should be able to decide if the territory was a slave state or free state. South thought the Mexican cession should be open to slavery and the Missouri compromise line should extend to the pacific coast. There was a compromise made stating that in the north, California would be a free state and the slave trade would end in Washington D.C. In the south, the fugitive slave act was passed and the Mexican cession was split into two territories. This is a key event because this is when more states forming and this led to the civil war because it was a big debate about slavery.

in 1854, senator Stephan Douglas thought about diving the land into 2 (Kansas and Nebraska). Douglas wanted to open up the land so railroads could pass through. When congress approved that message, it caused more controversy's. Kansas became a breeding ground for political violence. Violence broke out between pro and anti-slavery settlers, and Kansas become known as "bleeding Kansas." In May 21st, 1856, over 700 pro-slavery "border ruffians" attacked the anti-slavery town of Lawrence. They burned down the hotel, looted homes, and destroyed the printing presses. In May 23rd, 1856 John Brown invaded the pro-slavery town of Pottawattamie. At night, he and his 4 sons dragged 5 pro-slavery men from their beds and hacked them apart with swords. In Washington D.C, Brooks felt like Sumner has insulted his uncle's speech. 2 days later, he hit Sumner with his cane until it was broken. Sumner's injury impacted him for the rest of his life. Supporters sent Brooks a new cane with "hit him again" engraved on it. This is an important event because its when pro-slavery and anti-slavery people started physically attacking each other which led to the civil war because people from both sides were mad that they were being attacked and that people weren't agreeing with them.

The Manifest Destiny s the 19th century doctrine or beliefs that the expansion of the U.S throughout the American continents was both justified and inevitable. Americans thought it was right to go to "unsettled" places. The "unsettled" places that they settled at were already settled by the Native Americans and they were taking their land. This is an important event because this is when Americans decided to travel and look for some more places to live in order to expand the land a little bit. This led to the civil war because the Americans were caused controversy with the Native Americans by stepping on their land and not making sure that this place was a good and free place to settle.

Congress could not step in and ban slavery until 1807. In 1807, with a population of 4 million enslaved people in the south, a southern congress man joined the North and voted to abolish slavery which wasn't affective until January 1, 1808. The trade of enslaved people was still allowed in the south. This is an important event because, a southerner man joined the north in order to vote for them and make sure that slavery was still a thing in the North. He was being unfair during the vote. This led to the civil war because he wasn't allowed to go onto the northern peoples side and vote with them.

It makes up the continental U.S. It was an agreement between the United States and Mexico. The agreement was finalized in 1854 in which the U.S paid a lot of money in order to get this land from Mexico. It later became a part of New Mexico and Arizona. This was a big event because, the purchase was controversial because it brought up the debate about enslavement and it caused everyone to go into an argument and have differences which eventually lead to the civil war.

These new territories would soon become states and would once again be debated on whether or not it would be a slave state or not. Whether or not the new territories added to the union were a slave state or not was a big deal because there were 2 different groups of people that had opposite thoughts and would make a big debate about it because they wanted to stand for what was right.

The northern and southern states have been in an argument about slavery for a long time. In march of 1807, Thomas Jefferson signed a bill banning the slave trade. But, the southern states won and the slave trade didn't end up winning. This was an important even because its when someone actually tried to end the debate but even though they tried and the South won fair, this was still unfair for the north which led to the civil war.

The commerce compromise only allowed goods to be imported from foreign countries and not export from the united states. This gave the government the power to add taxes onto finished products. This was an important event because the us wasn't allowed to export good which would cause them to have a harder time to trade since they weren't really allowed to give anything back. This would have led to the civil war because of how some people might have thought this compromise was unfair.
