Mini Reflection: Micro Teaching – Social Sciences (Geography)

During my online micro teaching session, I presented a Social Sciences (Geography) lesson as planned, and the content delivery aligned with my objectives. The overall structure of the lesson was clear and well-paced. However, I encountered a few challenges that highlighted the need to adapt more effectively to the online environment.

Firstly, I initially expected learners to clap in response to certain parts of the lesson, which I later realized is not practical in an online setting where interactive expressions like clapping are limited. This showed me the importance of using digital-friendly forms of feedback such as emojis, reactions, or short written comments. Secondly, the YouTube video I included as part of the lesson introduction had audio issues, which impacted learner engagement at that moment. I have learned the importance of pre-checking all media content and ensuring the audio quality is suitable for online use.

Despite these technical and interactive challenges, the lesson proceeded smoothly and my teaching objectives were met. Going forward, I will continue improving my digital teaching skills and prepare more thoroughly for the technical aspects

Subject:Mathematics

Topic: Numeric Patterns

According to the CAPS document for Grade 7 Mathematics (2011: 37), learners must recognise, describe, and extend numeric patterns using repeated addition and multiplication. This is why I chose the topic “Discovering Patterns in Numbers.”

My lesson aimed to help learners identify and apply the rule of a number pattern in an input-output table. I am pleased to say that the learners achieved this objective. They were able to explain the patterns, apply the rule to complete the input-output table, and confidently share their own ideas in the chat.

One of my favourite parts of the lesson was the DJ Summary activity, where learners wrote creative Maths rhymes to summarise what they had learned. This showed me that they understood the content and could express it in their own words. The quiz at the end (Testmoz) also confirmed that most learners understood the topic well, as they got good scores and responded positively.

Through this microteaching experience, I learned how important it is to give clear instructions and explain the steps in a simple way. I also realised that online teaching needs lots of interaction to keep learners engaged.

If I were to improve, I would give learners a little more time to respond and maybe add a quick pair or group activity to encourage even more participation.

Overall, I feel the lesson went well, the objective was met, and the learners enjoyed the activities. I am thankful for this opportunity and for the feedback that helped me reflect on my teaching practice.

The strengths of my lesson was my clear explanation of content and use of questioning to check for understanding. I also felt confident in managing time and keeping the lesson structured. The ICT integration (using Kahoot) worked well and added a fun, modern touch to the session.

However, there are a few areas I could improve on. I noticed that I need to give more time for learners to think before answering and involve more learners in class discussions. I also want to work on giving clearer instructions during transitions between activities.

You handled a sensitive and historically complex topic with confidence .Your explanation of how the Dutch slave trade impacted both the Cape economy and the lives of enslaved people was thoughtful and age-appropriate for Grade 7 learners. I appreciated your use of visual aids and historical context, which helped learners better understand the concepts of slaves.

To enhance your lesson further, consider explaining some of the concepts in depth like the time frame of how long slavery took. Overall, your content knowledge was solid, and your approach was respectful and engaging. Great job on tackling such an important part of history.

I did experience some challenges during the presentation. There was a network problem, and at one point my laptop went blank. I had to quickly switch to my phone to continue teaching. Although it was stressful, it taught me the importance of staying calm, adaptable, and having a backup plan when teaching online.

Overall, this experience helped me reflect on my teaching practice. It showed me the value of interactive and inclusive strategies, good preparation, and flexibility to keep learners engaged despite technical difficulties. I look forward to applying what I learned in future lessons.

This reflection has helped me identify areas for growth and reminded me that good teaching requires constant adjustment, creativity, and responsiveness to learners' needs.
