It is important for a sports coach to be a leader. This way both the players/athletes and assistant coaches are motivated and focused on the same goal which is possible under your command. It is your leadership commitment to your team/athlete and the goal which will cause your team to be equally motivated and show the same ambition. Tracy Neville is an iconic leader who has led the England netball team to victory through her commitment and passion for the team.

Communicating with your team/athletes is a vital part of leading the team to the goal you desire, without clear communication it is harder to input your philosophy, knowledge and to support your team/athlete. communication is also important for setting the rules in order to lead by example. Without communication skills despite having the best knowledge of the sport the players/athletes you are coaching it is impossible for them to learn these skills without communication. Jose Mourinho is a great example for this as he is known for effectively implementing his strategy into any club he joins as well as supporting and motivating his team with the way he communicates with them.

Being a friend, is a very important part of coaching individual athletes. There is a lot of pressure on individual athletes as they cant share the responsibility with teammates and it is really important to provide these athletes with a softer, more comforting side because athletes take a lot of criticism and spend a lot of time travelling by themselves and it is the coach who should keep them company and motivate them. An example of this is Robert McCracken who has help Anthony Joshua blossom into the fighter he is today through this supportive role as well as coach.

The three coaching skills presented all have there advantages. A friend is more focused towards coaching for individual sports athletes because they are more exposed to criticism and require a shoulder to cry on. This also makes the athlete try harder for you knowing you are 100% supportive of there ability and potential.
On the other hand team sports which require less support and more of a leadership role in terms of coaching with passion and commitment to lead your team to victory. Although this is used for teams sports it can be implemented into any type of coaching, individual or team sports and I would suggest all coaches require this skill.
Finally communication, probably the most important role out of the three. Communication is the process of which you transfer your knowledge and philosophy which without communication the two other skills are almost useless I would suggest this is the most versatile and important skill.
