Mythology is the collection of beliefs of a certain group. Ishmael tells the man how Mother Culture has told them the beginning of earth ended when man was created. To put it bluntly, mother culture made man feel like they are the most important creature on earth: “Everyone in your culture knows that the world wasn’t created for jellyfish or salmon or iguanas or gorillas. It was created for man" (Quinn 61).

Ishmael tells in one of his lessons how man has violated many of the practices done in the natural community. More specifically, how they have become bloodthirsty killers. In the case of say, ivory hunting. More and more are hunter killing thousands of elephants just for the ivory.
https://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/04/world/africa/africas-elephants-are-being-slaughtered-in-poaching-frenzy.html

Ishmael explains how what truly makes the gods so powerful is their knowledge. More specifically, the knowledge of life and death:“This is indeed the proper knowledge of the gods: the knowledge of who shall live and who shall die"(Quinn 171). When talking about the tree of knowledge from the garden of Eden, the snake feels like a personification of Mother Culture. I mention this, because in the story, the snake convinces Adam and Eve to eat from the tree, granting them the knowledge of the gods and stripping them of their innocence: "Having tasted the fruit of this tree, he might say to himself, I have eaten at the gods’ own tree of knowledge and therefore know as well as they how to rule the world. I may do as I will do"(Quinn 172).

By looking at all of the evidence shown, there is enough reason to believe the message Daniel Quinn was trying to teach through Ishmael's words. But at the end of the day, maybe humanity and earth will not perish. For it is up to us as a society to try our best to break free from Mother Culture's shackles and save the world.
