As I am teaching secondary school students i am noticing a massive gap between groups who are absorbing the information and groups who are noticeably behind.
The formative assessment idea i feel would be useful to manage this is the "one minute paper"
The fact that it can highlight key areas in a lesson that are not being absorbed and identify in each group where i can elaborate, repeat and reflect with them would make the world of difference. I feel it will add a sense of clarification and confidence in my students that are less inclined to ask for help and need more elaboration on certain topics.

The one that stood out for me with one of my current group of students is the:

Muddiest Point

Ask students to write down what they perceived as the muddiest point in a lecture, reading, etc. The muddiest point is something that they still do not fully understand, or are having difficulty with. Collect responses then clarify these muddy points during the next class.

I feel this would allow those students who do not feel comfortable to speak up in a large groups to communicate with me where they are struggling.

I notice in the classes i teach it is very easy to offend the students and put them of learning. The idea of using strategic questioning seems a great idea. Using higher order questions, why and how, that make them think deeper and make connections with their learning. The program I teach in is very hands on, practical. Along with this it has a lot of skills to be learnt and built on through a students career in industry. Self - assessment and pair assessment would also help these students to give and receive feedback on work produced in a meaningful and encouraging way. This would also help them to learn from on another.

I think using the muddiest point exercise would work in my classes, A couple of reasons
1. I am a new tutor to an already established group of students. I have been working on the relationships but currently some students are wary. Doing this activity would allow a safe space for them to express what they are struggling with.
2, The content I am teaching is not my area of expertise. By collecting the responses I can make sure the information I am sharing to clarify is accurate and not just what I think I know.
