It becomes increasingly clear that Nick is uncomfortable with the atmosphere and would much prefer a quieter relaxing place that does not have alcohol, heated conversations, and smoke. Reflecting his personality as someone who would prefer nice conversation versus drunker parties.

Nick finally finds an opportunity to leave once things get to heated and Myrtle ends up getting hurt. Though Nick could of left at any time, it takes someone else to lead for him to follow and escape this situation.
