Today I started on my proposal form talking about what I did for the social media project that I will do better for this project. My plan to get the audience feedback was to do a survey for women in work and interviews my friends who are also women of color in Cardiff.

My idea is to film a documentary about women of color in the work industry by interviewing people such as women of color in work who have had work experience in the past or now. My aim is too get feedback from what it is like working in the workplace around white men and white women.

My target audience will be for all ages.

Today, I'm working on my treatment for what I'm going to do for my video. I did this by writing a title, logline for my film and basically summarized my synopsis for the documentary.

I think it would be better if I had a better synopsis for this with more detail on what my story is about but at the same time my synopsis doesn't have to be detailed as much since I'm interviewing people and I don't know what they're going to say. I didn't do a script for this so instead, I'm gonna ask people question and getting their feedback.

This is something i will put it in my documentary such as asking people if finding jobs can be hard for them as a women of color who wants a high paying job.

My target audience will be for women of color who currently working in jobs that go through the same thing. I feel like the target audience would reach more to Americans than people in the UK because American companies they can show they're being misogynist and race compared to the UK. The UK its more of getting rejected in a job because of your gender and ethnicity. This is a good target audience for people who are not working, so they can learn from my film.

The age will range from 15-20+ depending on the maturity and understanding of this topic.

The problem that I have encountered while planning on my production was getting people in my documentary. The reason for this is because some people don't want to be on camera and other people have never worked before and don't know what to say about this topic.

Some of the women I want to put in this documentary have said that they have never received backhanded or hateful comments from an employee whiles others said they have watched videos of people getting treated badly at work but not in real life. Because different people have different experiences, I felt inviting people who HAVE experienced being treated badly in work was a great idea to spread awareness for the woman of color in work watching.

Incase I don't find anyone, I was thinking I would invite my family members who have experienced backlash from managers or employees. Some people like my mum and aunts don't speak fluent English so they can tell their story on what's its like being foreign around white employees that know how to speak fully English.

I was thinking if I got a bunch of black women in the video who are currently unemployed, they can tell their side of the story on this topic about what it's like working around white people in schools, colleges and universities.

Script

Another problem that I have encountered was figuring out what people are going to say in the documentary. My friends were complaining about how they would get nervous and freeze in the middle of the video.

The solution that I thought of was to write a script to answer some of the questions and they can elaborate it in detail for example, one of the questions that came across my head that I put in my survey was "Do you think white men treat white women better in your job than other women of color or do you think they treat you equally?" A lot of people thought it was a yes or no question but I was expecting more explanation. I feel like a script on the side would be worth it so it can make the video stand out.

The first person I'm going to interview is Hanna since she was the first one who insisted to help me with the filming. she also asked her mum if she wanted to be in it as well. My plan was to put more people in the documentary but cause of the time, I wasn't able to.

I booked the equipment that I needed which was the tripod and mount and I'm going to start filming the first interview this evening. In the future, i should try and use a digital camera and more equipment.

So far I got 21 responses from employed people and unemployed people. This is good because it shows more people viewed the questions and know the understanding of the topic.

I will be sending the survey to my friends who are women of color and work in the retail stores. I think sending the survey to people that work, is a good way to find people in my documentary because they can relate to the topic and it will go to a bigger audience.

Today, I was pitching my idea to Emma. I think my pitch went well because i had a script to read from and it was clear for Emma to understand. I also liked the way I presented it because I did some backed up research before talking about people not finding jobs in and out of the film industry in the "Content" slide.

The feedback that I got back was to find people to be in my documentary. Emma said something about "staying out of my comfort zone" which is something I need to improve on.

I also have to ask random people who are women of color such as strangers, teachers and filmmakers. I did ask the mixed race filmmaker who came to this talk in the film studio. She was talking about her experience being a black filmmaker and Emma suggested that I should email her so she can be in the documentary to speak about her experience as a mixed race director.

The feedback I got was to include evidence that I'm finding people such as messages and emails from that person i will put in the documentary.

I emailed liana about the documentary interview and she emailed back saying she unable to do it because she was in London and couldn't do it here. She thought the interview was online so she declined it due to her being scheduled.

INTERVIEW 1

Yesterday, I started filming the first interview with my friend Hanna. I asked her 6 questions that I wrote on my phone. At first we agreed to film at Bute town Community Centre but then it got late and my friend was still in Uni, so we ended up filming at my place. She wrote a script on her phone for the answers but she managed to memories them the whole video.

Although, I should've added more questions about the bad experiences in the work because the answers were more good experiences. We ended up getting the filming done but we were laughing and giggling a lot during that moment and we had to refilm it a couple of times.

Another problem we also uncounted was the time we wasted to film this. My friend was 5 hours late after we agreed to meet at 4pm and she ended up coming at 9pm-10pm because she needed to do something and was still in Uni. We also lost focus because we were chatting way too much so we started to film at like 10:15.

Overall, I liked how the interview came out because I had a tripod which made my phone sit still and the lighting is bright and good. There was a good camera angle, I just don't like how the tripod wasn't steady enough but i made it work which was the best part.

Planning for Production

We were supposed to start filming at 1pm but we ended up starting at 4pm because she was in the middle of teaching. I didn't take my time seriously because i left my house late and i promised Josephine that I would do the interview at exact 12:30 but by then she was in a meeting so she was busy then.

The interview went well and we ended up getting it done straight away. We didn't re-film any scenes and we just went straight into it. They're some scenes that I cut out in the edit that she spoke about the most which was the film actors part. I would've gotten the whole footage on that part and put it in the edit.

Overall, i think she spoke the most out of all the people I have interviewed, she gave more facts and points on the topic. When we finished filming she also gave another point off camera about how women of color are treated in the work industry that we should've added into the video.

From my own feedback, I think that it went great because it took me a lot of time to find people to be in the documentary because everyone kept on declining until i kept trying and ended up asking my friend to ask other people to be in it which is really good and i can talk to new people and they can relate to it.

Before filming the interview, the science teacher Josephine said that she has always wanted to be in interview like this talking about her experience in the work places because she has gone through these issues in work. and i thought her response was pretty effective and good which, matched with the topic was about.

Personally i think i shouldve planned and filmed difeerent loactions. I was thinking about this while editing but i feel like if i filmed those same women doing their working jobs it wouldve made it less boring and more eye catching to the audience however, the interview on the location is great.

My first idea on the storyboard was to film the person's face while talking and then film a different angle while they're talking and then syncing the audio together like they do in other documentaries.

One of the positive feedback that i got after showing the documentary was, it looked liked an actual documentary you would see on TV because of the questions i asked and the way the women in the videos answered in detail. There was lots of facts and information talked about it the documentary and they didn't read from a script and the just spoke and was honest with themselves.

One negative feedback i got from Nick was to plan it all out because people can tell it wasn't mapped out properly from me randomly putting a shot i filmed of a logo on shops and shots outside a house. I felt like i randomly threw that in. I believe that i should've added more B roll related to the topic so it would make the documentary stand out better. I also was told to watch how documentaries are made because it seems i know how they look like I just don't know they're layed out.

Through the filming process she spoke about her experience in the care sector but she sought of went off topic about her experience. She spent 18 minutes on that same question about her bad experience in the care sector. I had to cut the video out in the edit and added the most important part she said.

Overall the production went great and we managed to get it done on time.

Trailer

Today, I started on the press kit by my making a website and trailer to promote my film. To make the trailer, I added a few clips from my actual film then summarized what its going to be about by using a title and wrote when the film would be released at the end of the trailer. I feel I should've made a longer version of the trailer approx. 2 minutes but it ended up hitting 56 seconds.

Website

After making the trailer, i then put my trailer into my website that I made in order to promote my film to my target audience. My website design was inspired to by liana's film website because it was effected and the theme was relatable. I did this by adding pictures of women in the workplace as my background. I think my website looks good for promoting my trailer because it has social media links and i have a synopsis on the story for the audience to see.
