The influences of our government came from the colonists' roots as a people. "Their English heritage and the political philosophers of the Enlightenment influenced the colonists’ notions of representative government, republicanism, constitutionalism, and law," (Democracy, 2). Unfair taxation an and unjust treatment influenced the colonist to take action.

The colonists declared independence ultimately they felt that they were being treated unfairly. They especially had reason to complain because of the situation that arose after the French and Indian War, "The British believed the colonists had an obligation to pay that debt," (Deomcracy, 2). Also they felt the new tax laws were unfair. The textbook states, "To help pay for the war, the king and his ministers levied taxes on tea, sugar, glass, paper, and other products," (Democracy, 2). These things led to the Colonist taking actiom. They did this by issuing the Declaration of Independence.

According to the textbook a Representative Government is, "A government in which people elect delegates to make laws and conduct government," (Democracy, 2).
