Fence Themes

Fences carries a theme of racism. Major of Fences takes place in the 1950s. America had made some growth with race relations, such as the integration of pro sports teams. But America still had a long way to go. Slavery was over but it still had a great affect on America. The characters in the play are black and experience racism everyday. The play takes place before the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Fences shows what it was like in the decade before the movement. An example of an character facing racism in Fences is that Troy was a garbage man worker and he was tired of picking up the trash and wanted to be the garbage truck driver but only whites had held this job. Fences also includes the theme of hope in the American dream. Troy wanted more than anything to be a pro baseball player, but his dream was stopped because of racial discrimination. This conflict reoccurs when Troy refuses to let his son Cory play football, which destroys Cory's chances of going to college. The play explores how the damaged dreams of one generation can damage the dreams of the next. By the end of the play, Cory must find a way to form new dreams out the ashes of the ones he's lost.

The Awakening has an theme of woman not having equal rights. The restrictions and expectations imposed on Edna in The Awakening are based purely on her gender. The societal structure of this era is that a woman was fit to be only a wife and mother, but Edna has other ambitions: artistic, financial, and sexual freedom. In seeking her own identity, Edna is doing the complete opposite of her society’s picture of the purpose woman.
