The Soviet Union Collapse (1990s) K

Throughout the 1990s the Soviet Union declined quickly and lost all of its Satellite Nations. There were many factors that led to the end of the Soviet Union. Mikhail Gorbachev created many of these factors when he became the leader of the Soviet Union. When Mikhail Gorbachev became leader, he put in place two policies: glasnost and perestroika. Glasnost meant openness and Mikhail wanted citizens to be able to speak freely. In reaction to this, the people opened up churches and investigated and reported on issues within the country. Former opposing political leaders were also released from prison and censoring was abolished. Glasnost gave people a taste of what life was like without the rule of communism and they loved it. Perestroika also helped loosen the communist restraints on Soviet businesses. Before perestroika, businesses could not choose what they produced, wages, or how much product they produced. This caused shortages of essential goods like soap or food. When perestroika was put in place, people were given more freedom to run their businesses the way they wanted to. This included choosing the wages of their workers, what goods and how many they produced, and even allowed people to open up their own small business. Additionally, people could vote for representatives in the government. However, while doing this, Gorbachev gained enemies. The hardliner communists tried to overthrow the government but failed. This led to Mikhail Gorbachev resigning as the head of the Soviet Union and the collapse of the communist party. While this was going on, the Satellite Nations were rebelling and gaining their independence from Germany. This happened until all of the Satellite Nations were free and the Soviet Union ceased to exist. This was one of the top global events during the 1990s because the Soviet Union was very strong and it was surprising to see it collapse so quickly along with the Communist Party.

Picture: A lady rests her purse on a fallen hammer-and-sickle which was the symbol of the Soviet Union. This picture was taken in 1991 which was towards the start of the collapse. The picture shows the deterioration of the country and people. As you can see, the people are not turned around or surprised about the fallen symbol at all, giving reason that it has been there for a long time. Also, in Stalin’s Soviet Union, the logo would be put back up immediately and someone would be arrested. On the other hand, in Mikhail Gorbachev’s Soviet Union, the sign has not been put back up and there were most likely no arrests made because of the policies Gorbachev put in place.

During the first attempt of trying to start peace talks, Israel and Palestine could not agree on the borders for Palestine. However, in 1993, secret talks started again in Oslo, Norway. Borders were agreed upon and Israel gave Palestine the Gaza Strip and West Bank, starting with the city Jericho. In return, the Palestinians had to end violence with Israel and acknowledge Israel as a real country. This agreement was signed by the Prime Minister of Israel, Yitzhak Rabin, and Yasser Arafat, the leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization in Palestine. The peace agreement was hard to keep intact as Palestinian terrorist groups constantly attacked Israel and even assassinated Yitzhak Rabin. After Yitzhak Rabin, Benjamin Netanyahu took over and talked with the Palestinians about giving them more territory of the West Bank in 1997.

Picture: Yasser Arafat (L), the head of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Prime Minister Israel, Yitzahk Rabin (L), shake hands as Bill Clinton (C), the president of the United States, looks over. The Oslo Peace Accords were signed on September 13, 1993 at the White House which served as a neutral site. The US did not take part in the agreements and did not gain much from the accords, especially because the accors failed a few months later. This handshake is one of the most dramatic ones of the century because of the tensions between both adversaries.

East Germany was being ruled by Erich Honecker who did not want to change, unlike West Germany. In 1989, Hungary allowed tourists from East Germany to go from Hungary into Austria. East Germans could go from Austria to West Germany. East Germans saw this as a way to escape into West Germany. This caused a major problem because thousands of East Germans were escaping, causing East Germany to close their borders completely. East German citizens protested and demanded that they should have the ability to travel at their own pleasure and vote for government positions. A new leader for Eastern Germany thought that opening the wall might save communism. Egon Krenz, the new leader, opened the wall, and almost immediately lost power along with the whole German Communist Party. When countries and world leaders started to discuss reunification, people were scared because they were of what could happen if Germany got all of its power back. People had seen what a powerful Germany had done before and didn’t want it to happen again; the West German Chancellor, Helmut Kohl said he would make sure that Germany never got that out of hand again. After a lot of convincing and assurance by Kohl, European countries accepted Germany’s reunification. Germany was officially united on October 3, 1990.

Picture: This picture shows the demonstrations held by East Germans in protest of their borders being completely shut down. This protest took place in Leipzig, East Germany and happened on October 9, 1989. Up to 70,000 people took part in the protest and even marched past the Stasi secret police headquarters. Regular police and Stasi stood to the side of the road as people marched past. The police could not do anything because of how many people they were outnumbered by. Also, even though the protest was peaceful, leaders of the protest were arrested.
