The Council of Nicea by Michael Solis

Council of Nicea.
One student from each group will be the actual Secretary regarding the weblink of THE COUNCIL OF NICEA. Here it is: https://www.christianhistoryinstitute.org/study/module/nicea/
DISCUSS AND POST YOUR ANSWERS TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
REVIEW & DISCUSSION
1. How important do you think it is that all churches should share the same doctrine and the same date for Christian festivals?
2. What do you think it must have been like to be present at this first meeting of all the church leaders? Some bishops there still bore injuries that they suffered from imperial persecution. How do you think they felt at this state-sponsored council?
3. What role did Constantine play at the council? Was his presence there a good influence?
4. How would you summarize the doctrine enshrined in the creed they produced? How does it rebut the teaching of Arius? Why is so much more space given to Christ than to God the Father or the Holy Spirit?
5. Why could some of those present not accept the creed? Does their argument hold water? Was the council right to condemn them as heretics?
Why was the creed proposed by Eusebius not adopted by the council? What were his reservations about accepting the official creed? Why did he assent in the end?
6. Does the Nicene Creed simply spell out the teaching of the Bible, or does it go further? Do you think it successfully draws the line between true and false Christianity?

Windsor Williams
Ryan Scandurra
Leroy Freelon
Tyler Sanders
Sydney Smith

1. We think it is very important that churches should share the same doctrine and the same date for Christian festivals because then there will be no arguing and everyone will be on the same page. Also, the church will not be divided.
2. We think it would be a great honor to be at the first council meeting because that means we are high esteemed and very important. Also we think it would be stressful and a little overwhelming but mostly exciting.
3. Constantine was an influencer and helped everyone agree together. Constantine's presence was a very good influence to the council and he helped them a lot.
4. We would summarize the doctrine enshrined in the creed they produced as the father, son , and Holy Spirit all be one as God. You rebut the teaching of Arius by strengthening your faith with relationship with God. Also we can rebut the teaching of Arius by helping each other and our community. More space is given to Christ than God because are very similar but Christ is the son while God is the father and Christ takes away the sins of the world.
5. Some of those present would not except the creed for thoroughly. yes, this argument holds water. The Council was right to condemn them because Arianism goes against their religion. The Creed was proposed then adopted by the council because Eusebius wrote and supported both sides. His reservations about accepting the creed were one sided. He assented them because he was reluctant towards the creed.
6. The spelling goes further than the Bible. yes, we think it draws a line between Christianty.

1. I believe it is very important that all churches should share the same doctrine so everyone has the same beliefs and can get along with each other. They would have no arguments. It is also important to share the same date for Christian festivals they only have to do a couple a year instead of so many different ones that are hard to keep track of.
2. It must have been devastating and hard to be at the first church council meeting because of all the persecution. If you were there, you must have felt important because you made history.
3. Constantine ruled the Roman empire and issued the Edict of Milan. He also returned a lot of the Church property that had been seized during the Great Persecution.
4. The doctrine enshrined in the creed they produced was the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit because they are the same people, but they thought they were different. The teachings of Arius can be rebutted by becoming more involved with God and become more devoted to Him. More space is given to Christ than to God the Father or the Holy Spirit because Christ is the Son of God who can take away all of our sins.
5. The people who were present probably didn't accept the creed because they had different point of views and religious beliefs such as believing that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit were different people. The argument does hold water. I think it is right to condemn them as heretics because if they did not choose to believe in what their religion was telling them to believe in, they shouldn't be in that religion. The creed was proposed by Eusebius and not adopted by the council because he did not want to support both sides. He also assented it because he was not fully into the idea of the creed anymore.
6. Even though the Nicene Creed spells out a lot of things in the Bible, but it can go much further than that. It does successfully draw the line between true and false Christianity.
