"Sent Meaning vs. Attached Meaning: Two Interpretations of Interpretation in The Scarlet Letter" by Richard Hull discusses the different symbols in the Scarlet Letter, such as the meteor, and gives different interpretations of them. Hull says that Dimmesdale sees the meteor as a sign, but Hawthorne does not want it to be one or for it to be interpreted as one; Dimmesdale thought the meteor was a sign only meant for himself while Hawthorne just makes it more supernatural. For Dimmesdale, the meteor was a sign from God and it had meaning but it did not get mentioned again the rest of the story-- the meteor was important to the characters, not the author.

The meteor signified different things for different people. Arthur Dimmesdale first saw this meteor hen standing on the scaffold. He recognized that the meteor made out to be the letter "A". This symbol is apart of the book because it can symbolize many things. The letter "A" he universal meaning in the book. While Dimmesdale is on the scaffold the meteor appears. He is shaming himself so in the moment to him the A can stand for Adulterer. To the townspeople don't believe it has anything to do with Hester or Dimmesdale, instead the believed it stood for "angel". They interpret it as the late Governor Winthrop entered heaven. The presence of the meteor brings the audience to decide what they think it means. How did Hawthorne interpret it? The meteor could potentially stand for Adultery, Angel, and even in Hester's case Able.
