It was fun to be there and it didn’t feel like work however we still performed really well and the branch was thriving. Everyone loved coming to work so much and it showed in their performance as we all won awards etc. Even the customers could see it. One time we played twister in the morning huddle which was so funny and still have the recording on it! It was the just the atmosphere

I worked in Travel when I first left school and did this for 9 years working up to Customer Service Manager. I have worked in training for over 20 years and FE where I was responsible for 13 colleagues across 2 sites. This was challenging, however gave me a good grounding for what was expected as a manager.

He is an introvert, very shy, not very knowledgeable. He didn't believe in himself either.
With additional support, he was able to pass the course.
I replicate my commitment to my learners every day, at every session.

I worked with a lady who was a manager at a cleaning company in Barnsley. She had worked her way up to management and had not done learning since school and she was in her early 50's. She has 0 confidence in herself and her ability to complete the qualification. I worked closely with her and provided positive verbal feedback on every assignment as she couldn't read too well. She passed the course which was an amazing achievement! I think my learning was to be adapting to the learners situations.

I feel I've played a significant part in helping a number of learners move into careers in the public services, including learners who've gone on to Sandhurst, the Royal Marines or emergency services. One particular learner who struggled socially at college went on to be an Ambulance Call Handler and has more recently become a paramedic. I particularly encouraged him to be pro-active in events, taking the lead and stepping up into positions of responsibility. A couple of years after he left the college he came back and gave a presentation to my department.

My trips to church with my family played a part in my earliest sense of right and wrong. If I'm honest, I felt my time in the Army also played a part, where I really had to 'live' by a certain set of standards for a number of years, within a whole community where everyone else was living by those standards. And then, actually as a leader of a whole department, responsible for over 100 learners each year and with about 10 colleagues who looked up (or down!!) to me, I really felt I had to set an example.
