Summary:The poem’s opening addresses the dangers of skepticism and overthinking, symbolized by “the clouds of reason.” The poet illustrates a bewildering path where individuals often become lost, their souls ensnared in confusion. Despite their own uncertainty, these individuals stumble and try to lead others, lacking the necessary guidance themselves.

This poem contains line single stanza, this is known as “block form”

This poem follows a rhyme scheme of ABBCDEEFGFG.

All the lines of the poem are quite short, apart form the last line of the poem.

beginning with “youth of delight”, the ancient bard is the speaker and is alluding to the innocence or joy or the fresh perspective that youth brings, which symbolises new beginnings.

The use of the homophone “morn” could litterally mean the beginning of a new day, but Can also signify death and decay. Highlighting the duality within his poem, and the blissful nature of ignorance as you don’t know what is coming.

‘New born’ and ‘doubt is fled’ highlights new beginnings and youth and the lack of skepticism this brings, no time for overthinking and second thought

The “clouds of reason” Are also coupled with “dark disputes and artful teazing” highlighting that excessive reasoning and and arguments can distract from pure understanding

‘folly is an endless maze’ - suggesting that lack of good sense and ignorance can lead to misguided beliefs and fall into a trap of a cycle of misguided confusion

‘Tangled roots’ further emphasise the theme of confusion that runs throughout the poem, could also imply that whoever has these ‘tangled roots’ do not know where they are from, as their family roots are unclear

‘Bones of the dead’ - reminiscent of a graveyard, symbolises the people who have bottom lost within their folly and misconceptions.This paints a scene of individuals wandering lost, tripping over the consequences of their own or others’ past errors.

“And wish to lead others when they should be led.” This suggests a degree of irony in the experience. Those lost in folly often believe they are enlightened and seek to guide others. They are unaware that they are in need of guidance.
