The scene is set a few miles south of Soledad, by a peaceful salinas river, before the setting becomes alive with two men; Lennie and George, and their different characters.

- Lennie is referred to being child-like in scene one and throughout the novella "his arms did not swing at his sides, but hung loosely" this evokes that Lennie is an awkward character, who behaves quite child-like with no confidence in himself.
- Lennie is also compared to being animalistic with his movements and appearance "dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws" this suggests that Lennie is clumsy
"Jus' a dead mouse George" foreshadowing.

-"if I was alone I could live so easy," - foreshadowing that he will eventually live alone.
"Do I have to sock you?" Shows there parent-child like relationship, George has to look after Lennie.
"George exploded" shows his short temper. Eventually contrasts with how calm he is in the final scene.
