Herbalism is an ancient practice in Russia and part of their medical school's curriculum. Many pharmacists also study and incorporate herbal medicine.

The herbal practices include:
- The Cossacks used hypericum for treating wounds (the herb’s historical name is dzherrabai, which means “wound healer”).
- Tavolga tea is said to relieve pain and treat stomach ulcers, diarrhea, nausea, rheumatism, and gout.
Currant leaves (Smorodina) have been used since the 11th century in ointments, infusions, brews, and tea.
