Intro: Self-management is defined as "the ability to successfully regulate one's emotions, thoughts and behaviors in different situations." Life is complicated, and no matter how self-directed or independent we think we are, the reality is we rely heavily on others to help navigate the "roads" we travel in life. The help that we receive from the people around us is called social support, and it can have a very positive impact on our ability to mange emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in all kinds of different situations. Let's watch a quick video that dives a bit deeper into the different dimensions of social support.

Model: After watching the video share ways in which you tap into social support to manage your emotions.

Questions for students:

Name the five dimensions of social support.

Emotional support-Who do you lean on for emotional support? Why did you choose this person? Who leans on you for emotional support? How do you provide it?

Esteem support-Who do you lean on for esteem support? Give an example of a moment when you received encouragement. How did it make you feel to hear that encouragement?

Informational support-Share an example of informational support that came in handy.

Tangible support-Give an example of a tangible support that you rely on. Describe your feelings toward the source of that tangible support.

Companionship support-I like to think of companionship support as having a solid teammate. Who is your teammate in the "game" of life? How do you and your teammate support each other?

Closing: When we are open to receiving and giving support we help both ourselves and others in managing emotions, thoughts and behaviors.

Intro: Slowly but surely we are inching our way closer to the holiday season. We may get excited about the opportunity to receive gifts but let's take a moment to reflect on the joys that can come from giving. In today's video, we're going to watch some kids who are put in a position where they have to make a difficult choice. A choice between receiving and giving. Let's take a look and see if they are responsible in their decision making.

Model: Share your thoughts on the video.

Questions for students:

How do you feel about the choices made by the kids in this video?

Do you think it was difficult for these kids to make those choices? Why?

Can you share an experience of a time when you chose giving over receiving?

How does it make you feel when you choose to give?

How is choosing to give an example of a responsible decision?

Closing: When we choose to give we are almost always making a responsible decision. So as we work our way towards this years holiday season, make the act of giving a priority. When you give, you spread joy to others, and you might be surprised by how much joy you end up receiving:)

Intro: Self-awareness focuses on developing an understanding of our thoughts and feelings. We have a great little "motivational" video today that talks about the relationship that you have with yourself. In this video a man named Prince Ea talks about the importance of being yourself as opposed to changing who you are in order to gain popularity. He shares some pretty powerful thoughts, and I'm excited for you to hear them. Take a look and we'll have a chat about some main ideas to follow.

Model: Share a portion of the video that struck a chord with you.

Questions for students:

Share your main thoughts or take aways after watching the video.

What do you think about the following quotes from the video?

"You are enough already."

"Don't trade your dignity for popularity."

"You will be worth knowing." What makes you worth knowing?

"It is who you are that makes you great." What makes you great?

Closing: Popularity is a fleeting thing. What exists in your heart, your mind, and the way that you treat people has staying power. So be yourself, love yourself, and know that the real ones have flaws, and that's ok:)

Self-Management: An Olympic Gold Medalist Shares Her Secret To Overcoming Negative Self-Talk

Intro: We all get down on ourselves from time to time. When this happens we might have an internal dialogue that can be quite negative. "You're not good enough, strong enough, smart enough", etc. There is a term for this kind of thought process. It's called "negative self-talk". While it is pretty normal to think in this way from time to time, it's definitely not helpful. So if we find we are speaking negatively to ourselves, we want to have a way to redirect that thought process. Let's get some tips as to how to do that from Olympic Gold Medalist Sanya Richards-Ross.

Model: Share an example of a time when you redirected a negative internal dialogue.

Questions for students:

Describe the negative self-talk Sanya experienced as she prepared to win an Olympic Gold Medal.

Think about a time when you needed to perform at a high level. Did you experience any negative self-talk at that time? If so, what did it sound like and how did it make you feel?

How did Sanya redirect her negative self-talk into a more positive direction?

How can we apply Sanya's advice the next time we experience a bout of negative self-talk?

Closing: Practice self-awareness and recognize when your internal dialogue is going negative. Practice self-management by redirecting those thoughts into a more positive direction.

Relationship Skills: It Is Never OK To Bully

Intro: You have an impact on the people around you. What kind of impact do you want to make? If you treat others with kindness and compassion, you'll have a positive impact. If you bully someone, your impact will be the exact opposite. Bullying consists of seeking to physically or mentally harm someone through intimidation, mocking or name calling. We have a video today that gives us a glimpse of bullying that took place at a high school basketball game in the form of mocking. I think this video will give you a good look at the negative impact that bullying can have on people. Take a look.

Model: Share your thoughts on the video with students.

Questions for students:

What are your thoughts on the actions of the bully?

Some people might say that the bully was just trying to be funny. Why were his actions not funny?

What impact did the bullies actions have on James Jr and his mother?

Mocking and or making fun of others is a form of bullying. What can you do to make sure that these actions are not a part of our classroom environment and school community?

Closing: I think we can all agree that the actions of the bully in this video are not representative of a solid relationship skills practice. Mocking and making fun of others is not ok. It is hurtful to others and to the community as a whole. Lead with kindness and compassion. Spread joy instead of pain. Let's work together to make bullying, in all forms, a thing of the past.

Social-Awareness: The Hill We Climb

Intro: When we practice social awareness we take the perspectives of others, we recognize the strength in others, and we demonstrate empathy and compassion in our interactions with others. We're going to show you a video today of the poem recited by Amanda Gorman at last years inauguration. She had the tough job of trying to reach out and connect with all people in a nation that has been pretty divided in the last few years. Her performance was a great example of social awareness in action as she most definitely took the perspectives of others, recognizing their strengths while showing compassion and empathy. Take a look at her performance.

Model: Share a line or thought from Amanda's poem that struck a chord with you.

Questions for students:

Share a line or thought from Amanda's poem that struck a chord with you.

Let's break down a few lines from the poem. Please share your thoughts on the following line: "So we lift our gazes not to what stands between us but to what stands before us. We close the divide because we know to put our future first we must put our differences aside."

What can you do to live the message in the following line? "We seek harm to none and harmony for all."

What does the following line tell you about self-management? Even as we grieved we grew. Even as we hurt we hoped."

Conflict is exhausting. What does the following line tell us about choosing communication and cooperation over conflict? "Victory won't lie in the blade but in all the bridges we've made."

Last one: "For there is always light if only we're brave enough to see it, if only we're brave enough to be it." What can you do to both see, and be the light?

Closing: Social awareness ultimately comes down to our ability to lift up the people around us through respect, appreciation, empathy and compassion. Amanda Gorman provided a great model for us. Let's try to take her words to heart in our actions and interactions with the people in our community.

Social-Awareness: The World Falls In Love With a 150 Year Old Song

Intro: We have a quick and easy lesson to end the week. One that I hope puts a little bounce in your step and a little bit of joy in your heart. There is a song that is going viral on Tik Tok right now. It is a catchy, old, sailing song and it is currently number #3 on the I-tunes charts in England. What's so cool about this story? Well, it's really bringing a lot of people together. People from all different cultures and backgrounds are uniting to put their own spin on this 150 year old tune. It's a great reminder that even amongst the craziness of this past year, we have the power to come together to create something beautiful. Take a look, and a listen to "The Wellerman."

Note to teachers: You can have a discussion on this but you also can just jump straight to the closing.

Closing: How would that song sound if only one person was performing it? Not bad, but not as good as it turned out with multiple contributors. The diversity of influence brought new tones, new instruments, and even a hot remix. Don't forget, we work better when we work together and share our unique talents. Let's keep that in mind in our actions and interactions as a class today.

Note to teachers: I think we can either let this video sit with students or you can have an off the cuff discussion to follow. Intro and closing below. Teacher discretion on discussion.

Intro: We can practice social awareness in many different ways: activism, advocating for social justice, fighting for equity in our systems and policies. All noble pursuits. The foundation, and heart of social-awareness lies in the impact we make in our immediate sphere of influence. Do we act with compassion when we see suffering with our own eyes? Do we take the perspective of and empathize with the people around us? Do we stop to lend a helping hand when it is needed? We have a video today that shows action within that immediate sphere in a heartwarming and inspiring way. Take a look.

Model/Discussion: Teacher discretion.

Closing: A community in China. A member of that community is suffering. That suffering is recognized, and actions are taken to alleviate that suffering in a small but meaningful way. A great example of social-awareness and one that I challenge you to emulate as you go about your day.

If so, share your story.

Questions for students:

Share your thoughts on the video.

Vivian was an advocate for female representation in children's toys. If you were to advocate for a cause what would it be?

Vivian advocated for her cause through contacting toy companies via a written letter. What would be the route you choose to communicate your advocacy? Who would you communicate too?

Why is it important to advocate for ourselves and the causes and policies that we believe in?

Closing: See a problem, communicate why it is a problem along with some solutions as to how to fix it, and you're an advocate:) You're never too young to stand up for what you believe in:)
