This marks an important part in the novel because it gives an explanation of Celie's feeling towards the men in her life and other men in general.
- When Celie is married and moves in with her husband she has to take up the responsibilty of being a mother figure for his husbands children. Aside from being the care taker of his kids she is raped and constantly beat by him for no apparent reason. 
-Celie has some of her advice backfire on her. She gave her stepson Harpo the idea of beating his wife, Sofia, in order to knock some sense into her. Sofia then confronts Celie because she felt betrayed by her. It seems ironic how Celie would have Harpo beat Sofia when Celie herself disliked when she got beat.
-Towards the end of the novel there appears to be a social change its as if everything the story had led up to suddenly reverses and turns into something completely opposite of what it once was. For example, Eleanore, a white woman and daughter of the mayor, was working for Sofia, a colored woman. At the beggining of each new letter, Celie starts of  by saying "Dear God" this symbolizes the faith Celie has towards something greater than her. This was her escape route, someone shec ould speak to without being afraid of any judgement.
