As people wish the dead to go to heaven, it is like hell for them as they are left behind, still grieving and in emotional pain.

8. In "My life closed twice before its close," the specific events that twice closed the speaker's life are not mentioned. What suggests that they were a kind of death?
In "My life closed twice before its close," the two unfortunate events could be suggested as a death of two people. Perhaps Emily Dickinson has been mourning for two friends or loved ones who have died. The line, "As these that twice befell." is the clue/hint that something unfortunate has happened to two loved ones.

Poem Analysis Question 1

1. What is the poem's tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?
The overall tone of the poem is quite gloomy and bleak as Emily describes the feelings of melancholy she suffers through when her beloved friends or family dies. Words such as "So huge, so hopeless to conceive" demonstrates the loneliness she suffers from in her life due to the losses. However, the poem itself features irony as the title states how Emily's life has closed twice, as in dies twice, which contradicts with the idea of only dying once.

2. What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.
The central idea of the theme has to do with the feeling of isolation and mourning for the deceased. In the poem, Emily is dealt with two "events" that leaves her so terribly scarred and permanently miserable that she wishes a third event upon herself. The "events" are most likely a code name for death so one can infer that Emily had coped with 2 deaths of her beloved that overwhelmed her to point where she wanted to die herself based on the line that reads " A third even to me."
