  • Soldiers who support the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad,
  • fighters known as rebels, who don't want Assad to be in power anymore, and
  • the group that call themselves the Islamic State.

While soldiers who support Assad are all considered one group, run by the government, there are thought to be more than 1,000 different rebel groups, including rebel fighters, political parties conflicted with Assad, and exiled rebels who are unable to return to Syria.

The government then responded by opening fire some of the protesters, along with mourners from the next day. Unrest due to the Government's responses spread throughout the country, with people demanding for Bashar al-Assad's resignation. His refusal to do so angered protesters even further. However, Assad still had citizens who were loyal to his reign, leading to conflict among them and the protesters. In 2014, they took over many parts in Syria's Neighbor, Iraq, then moved east into Syria. Both rebel groups and the military began combating the IS, attempting to stop it from taking over. But as the IS became more powerful and dangerous, countries began planning airstrikes on the group, leaving many parts of the country in more and more distress.
