1. What is language?

Language is the main tool human beings use to communicate with one another. Through language, people can express ideas, emotions, opinions, and experiences. It helps individuals understand each other and build relationships within a society. Language is not only spoken; it can also be written or expressed through signs. It plays an essential role in daily life because it allows humans to share knowledge, culture, and history.

2. Features of language (5 features)

One important feature of language is communication, because its primary purpose is to transmit meaning between people. Another feature is structure, since language follows rules such as grammar and sentence order that make messages clear and understandable. A third feature is creativity, which allows speakers to create new sentences and express original ideas, even if they have never said them before. The fourth feature is change, because language evolves over time as society, technology, and culture change. The fifth feature is culture, because language reflects the traditions, values, and identity of the community that uses it.

And, what is arbitrary?

Language is considered arbitrary because there is no natural connection between a word and its meaning. Words do not describe objects by their sound or form; instead, their meaning exists because people agree on it. For example, the word “book” does not naturally represent a book, it only has that meaning because speakers of English accept it. This arbitrariness explains why different languages have different words for the same object.

Language is a structured system of symbols—spoken, written, or signed—that humans use to create and share meaning. It is not only a tool for communication but also a way of organizing thoughts, expressing identity, and building social relationships. Unlike simple signals, language is flexible and creative: with a limited set of sounds or signs, people can produce an unlimited number of new messages. It evolves over time as communities change, reflecting culture, history, and human cognition.
