M10: Memories of Notetaking by Elizabeth Napier

To foster connections with the content, post your earliest memories of note taking, and how you learned to take notes. For me, I remember highlighting being one of my earliest memories of how to take notes. I loved using many different colors to organize the information I saw as important.

My teacher would write the notes on the board and we would copy them onto our papers. I did not like it because I hated looking up at the board then down at my paper, then back up at the board, and back down to my paper. It was a hassle.

My earliest memory of note taking is from upper elementary when I highlighted papers that my teachers would pass out. I truly don't remember taking notes until I got into junior high. I remember getting guided notes where I would have to fill in the blank of key words that the teacher would read to the class. I could never follow along with guided notes because I would lose my place when looking at the board and looking at my notes. I have never been a fan of note taking. :)

My first memory of note taking was probably in either fourth or fifth grade when we began underlining and highlighting important facts to remember. I was always the person that had most of my page underlined or highlighted because I thought everything was important. I still have trouble with this and would not choose highlighting as my choice way to take notes. The first time I remember taking actual written notes was in 7th grade history. My teacher was very tough and would write the format on the board in which she thought we should use to take notes. What's funny though is that I still use a form of this note taking method when I take notes today.

The earliest memory I have of note taking was using highlighters. As a kid, I was super organized when it came to note taking. I loved using highlighters; I would even do my own note taking activities, such as highlighting all of the nouns in my Junie B. Jones book in green, verbs in yellow, and adjectives in pink. After highlighting, we learned how to take written notes during classes in late elementary school. I had a hard time writing notes because I would want to get as much information written down as possible, but it was difficult for me because teachers would move too quickly.

One of the first things i remember learning about notes was using post-it note flags to mark important sections of reading. We would highlight a word or section of a text, and then place a post-it note on the edge of the page nearest to what we had highlighted so it was quick to find it again. We also used different colors of highlighters, and corresponding colors of sticky notes, to represent different things in the text. For example, yellow was vocabulary, orange was for words we struggled with, etc. I think this method actually helped me form how I still take notes. I find that it's easier to locate and organize individual things in a larger section or document.

I honestly do not remember much note taking before high school. I remember using different styles of concept maps at younger ages, but my first memory of actual note taking is probably freshman year of high school when our history teacher made us all take notes a specific way. This is a skill that I think is taught with reading and for reading comprehension at younger ages. Note taking is a great skill to develop and teach so students can collect their thoughts while learning.

I can't tell you want we would take notes on but I remember in 5th grade, we would take notes on books by finding words we didn't know in the books. We would also write notes in math by writing what the teacher wrote on the overhead projector. I was a lot of group or non individual note taking. What I mean by non individual note taking is that it was either a word right in front of me in the book, or my teacher had us right exactly what she wrote. It wasn't anything we had to really think too much about.

To be honest, I do not remember my earliest memory of notes being before the fifth grade, when we spent a few weeks memorizing the bill of rights. Other than that, I did not have a lot of exposure with being taught to take proper notes or even highlight. Later in my schooling, I realized that I had to teach myself about outlining, highlighting, and note taking and that was difficult to do. However, I have always had a decent memory so I saw some aspects of outlining and note taking as futile. Now, I utilize not taking in all of its forms and plan to ensure my students have exposure to it at an earlier age.

My earliest memory of note taking was highlighting information in early elementary school. We highlighted and circled key parts of questions. We also did the same when we saw vocabulary or change in text such as italics. Later on in middle grades I learned to take quick bullet point notes. As I moved on in school teachers then took the time on teaching note-taking skills. Some provided guided notes, others suggested highlighting, others suggested making an outline, and finally others suggested bullet points.

One of my earliest memories of note taking was in fourth grade when we were being taught to write while we read. We would all have a piece of paper next to us and we would have to jot down notes that we got from the reading. Along with this was when we learned to highlight as well. So as we were writing down notes we would highlight which ones we thought were the most important.

I remember being taught how to make an outline for notes in fourth grade. Although I think it was good to be exposed to that method, I don't remember practicing making outlines on my own, so I don't think that it was enforced. Therefore, I just learned to take notes using my own method.

Not exactly sure if this counts as note taking, but my earliest memories consisted of me highlighting, underlining, and circling portions of word problems. Highlighting the key details, circling the numbers involved and underlining the question that was being asked. I remember in 6th grade pulling out characteristics of characters and putting them into webs and graphic organizers.

This may be sad to read, but I do not think that I took many notes while I was in school at all. The notes that I remember taking were the guided notes that teachers would give you while you were watching an informational movie. I never felt like those had any worth but were simply so we would pay attention. I believed I learned about note taking when I first started highlighting. It was not until college where I truly embraced highlighting.

I remember taking notes for the first time in 4th grade. My teacher was reading a chapter book and we had to write about what was happening in the story. In 5th grade, remember watching Bill Nye the Science guy and filling in the blanks of sentences of things said during the video. The following year, in 6th grade, I have awful memories of copying notes onto notebook paper after viewing a projector screen about history and falling asleep while taking the notes.
